The Writing Process Approach The Writing Process is a “real life” approach to teaching students how to write. It replicates the way people really use writing in their daily lives. This approach lends itself to the diversification of teaching strategies, which makes it different from the traditional way of teaching writing. It involves the following steps; Pre-Writing Drafting Revising, Editing, and Proofreading Publishing

I. Pre-Writing Activities that precede writing that activate the thought processes before writing a draft. Eg. Free Writing Clustering Idea List Graphic Organizers Technology Connection-Inspiration Software

II. Drafting The organization of the information gathered during the pre-writing activity. It is now filtered and shaped to meet the assigned task or the author’s intent. At this point in the process, content is emphasized over mechanics. Eg. Models (Templates) Structured Rubrics Technology Connection-Students can use word-processing programs to type up pieces of their work.

III. Revising, Editing, and Proofreading During this part of the process, the author discusses with others how a part of the paper can be made better. Then, the author modifies the writing based on the feedback that was received. Eg. Think/Pair/Share and Co-operative Learning Groups can use rubrics, checklists, and teacher made questions to analyze a peer’s writing. Individual Writing Conferences Teacher Corrections

IV. Publishing This is when the author’s work is shared with the public as a finished product. Students can create the following; eg. Newspaper/Magazine/Newsletter-Chatbooks.com Brochure Card Flyer A Web Page etc….. Technology Connection-MicrosoftWord Frontpage Microsoft Publisher
