1 EMAPP Ethnic Minority Access and Participation Project Ruhi Grover

2 Members of Subgroup are: Cheryl Batt, Service Manager Julian Hillman, Director, Ealing Mencap Mike Crowe, District Manager, Mencap Rajnish Sharma, Carer Virdee, Carer Ruhi Grover, Project Officer, Mencap

3 What do we do? 1.We build family support networks and consultation meetings Produce bi-annual newsletters in three languages Run family focus groups – Asian, Somali, Afghani once or twice a month Build relationship with families of school leavers

4 What is happening : Started an Asian female service users’ group - twice a month Organise consultation meetings so that family members can engage with service providers – Ealing Health Day on May 3 Organise Information Days – July 12 – Wills and Trusts Day

5 What is happening : Will hold a cross-Borough forum to provide families an opportunity to learn about local progress and examples of good practice Assist and represent families to present their views to the Partnership Boards Steering group is a sub group of the Partnership Board- family members attend and bring issues to the table

6 What is happening : We are going to build partnership with other ethnic minority led organisations and develop their capacity to support their learning disabled members and their families Asian and Somali

7 What is happening We will also enhance the role of mainstream campaigning advocacy groups in supporting people from ethnic minority communities 4. We are supporting the Joint Service to respond to the Development themes it has lead responsibility for: Transition, PCP, Respite etc.

8 Recommendations for the Partnership Board to consider & How the Partnership Board can help: Make sure that the EMAPP Report’s recommendations are implemented Raise the profile of Black and ethnic minority families and carers

9 Recommendations for the Partnership Board to consider & How the Partnership Board can help: Provide effective links between the EMAPP sub group and other groups Put in place a process to ensure that culturally appropriate services are provided to families
