2 Warm Up Questions What allowed people to start exploring the open seas? Explain what early explorers were looking for? What do you know about Christopher Columbus? Who discovered America?

3 Early Explorers Portuguese were the 1st to start exploration
Used caravels--a quick, highly maneuverable ship with both triangular and square shaped sails Square sails carried ship forward Triangular sails allowed ships to sail in the wind

Was an Italian who sailed for Portugal Hmmmmmm Not the 1st European to reach the “New World”---but given credit for it His voyages led to European awareness of the New World--led to European colonialization

Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria 1st Voyage--1492 Made a ton of mistakes---hmmmmm Thought Asia was larger then it really was Thought the world was smaller than it really was Did not know about North America

Denied by the king of Portugal--advisors told king not a good investment Approached King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain for funds Promised them riches beyond their belief Promised them he would spread Christianity They agreed and funded him

11 1st Voyage Reached the Caribbean islands--he called them San Salvador and Hispanola Thought he was in the West Indies--called the natives Indians: where we get the name Indians Encountered a group called the Taino Pre-Columbus: 5 groups over 10,000 people By 18th century: population decimated by disease, slavery, and assimilation Spanish forced them to work on plantations

Introduced horses to the “New World” Brought tobacco back to Spain Overall not what he promised the king and queen When returned to Spain: placed in shackles and sent to jail King and queen eventually forgave him Died a relatively wealthy man
