Denied by the king of Portugal--advisors told king not a good investment
Approached King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain for funds
Promised them riches beyond their belief
Promised them he would spread Christianity
They agreed and funded him

Reached the Caribbean islands--he called them San Salvador and Hispanola
Thought he was in the West Indies--called the natives Indians: where we get the name Indians
Encountered a group called the Taino
Pre-Columbus: 5 groups over 10,000 people
By 18th century: population decimated by disease, slavery, and assimilation
Spanish forced them to work on plantations

Variety of “new” fruits and veggies

Introduced horses to the “New World”
Brought tobacco back to Spain
Overall not what he promised the king and queen
When returned to Spain: placed in shackles and sent to jail
King and queen eventually forgave him
Died a relatively wealthy man
