Geometric measurement: understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and to addition. Geometric measurement: recognize perimeter as an attribute of plane figures and distinguish between linear and area measures.

9. Frequently Asked Questions Q: How do I prepare my child for the EOGS? Ask your child questions about what they are reading. Have them discuss the setting, characters, plot/conflict, and resolution. Please be sure child is using RUNNERS on all passages that come home to reinforce the skill. Be sure to utilize Study Island, which provides great review and test taking practice. Check out the New York State Testing Program website at http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/common-core-sample-questions/ Make sure your child is at school as much as possible to be sure that he or she is not missing any important information. Have your student get a good night of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast every morning. And be positive!

10. Q: Are all the teachers covering the same concepts in class? A: Yes. All teachers follow the same state required objectives for the third grade and address all test preparation strategies. Q: How much writing will be on the EOG? A: There is no writing on the EOGs. Students will be bubbling in answers on bubble sheets. Q: Are there any extra resources we can use to help them prepare? A: You can utilize Study Island (www.studyisland.com) or Reading Express (Readingeggs.com) to review and/or double check reading and math papers that are sent home, utilize all testing strategies, including RUNNERS, and practice multiplication facts. **Students must know their multiplication facts automatically. This is a major portion of the math test. The website: (ixl.com) is full of great Common Core math problems.www.studyisland.com

11. Q: Will EOG results determine where my child will be placed next year in reading and math? A: No, EOG results will not be released until October of next year. Classes will be formed based on various other data sources. Q: Will the school be selling any End of Grade Test preparation materials? A: Polo Ridge will not be selling any EOG preparation materials. Teachers will be utilizing EOG preparation materials in class that the PTA has purchased for third grade. However, numerous EOG preparation materials are available at local bookstores and teacher supply stores. (Just make sure they are based on Common Core North Carolina Standard Course of Study.) Also, Study Island is a great resource that is available to all students free of charge. Q: Will EOG tutoring be offered to students at school? A: Tutoring sessions have already begun. As a grade level we were allotted a number of tutoring spaces for before school tutoring in reading and math, and they have been filled.

12. Q: Are the tests timed? A: The tests are not timed, but the maximum time allowed is 4 hours for each test. All students are expected to finish within this time frame, unless they have accommodations. Q: Can the students ask to clarify a question during the test? A: Teachers are unable to clarify questions during the EOG. Students must read and answer the questions to the best of their abilities. Q: Will the students take the EOG in their own classroom with their teacher? A: Yes, unless they have testing accommodations.

13. Q: What are the dates and times for testing? A: Testing will be the week of May 20, 21 st and 22nd. Testing will begin promptly at 9:15 and go until every student is finished. You will receive more information about the days specific tests will be given as we approach the testing date. Any student who is tardy will NOT be admitted to class and will have to take the makeup. Q: How will the testing days be structured? A: All students in grade 3-5 will test in the mornings. After testing they will be provided a break (recess) and then lunch. After lunch they will participate in low-key activities and/or special areas. Q: How many questions will be on the EOGSs? A: On the Reading EOG there will be approximately 50-60 questions. On the Math EOG there will be 54 questions (27 calculator in-active and 27 calculator active).

14. Q: Can you study for this test? A: Students can best prepare for the test by completing all assigned class work and homework. They can prepare by reading daily at home. Students must practice and utilize the test taking strategies in class and at home. Also, students can prepare by attending school consistently. Study Island is a great way for them to practice at home. Q: Does the student need to bring anything on the days of the testing? A: Students will be provided all materials needed for the testing. Q: Does the EOG count as a grade? A: EOGs will not be a part of the report card grade. Q: Will there be open ended questions? A: All the information we have received at this point indicates that there will be no open ended questions.
