3. Ofsted Report Dec 2013 – Sir Michael Wilshaw’s Speech – two nation education system “The lucky child is born in the right postcode, goes to the right school and has the widest opportunities, the unlucky child does not.” (HMCI, December 2013) Schools are improving – especially primary – 78% good or better Too much variation – between schools and across LAs Lower attainers and poor white pupils underachieving No-notice inspections – where behaviour is a concern Call for more external testing – KS1 & KS3 Leaders should take part in inspections The Unlucky Child

4. Teaching – pace of learning not pace of activities Best practice need to be shared across the country more – National Service Teachers Holding academies to account – especially in the weaker chains Underperforming LAs targeted “The lucky child is fortunate in his geography: he attends a school run by a local authority or an academy chain that knows its schools well and knows the people who run them. They know what progress is being achieved and challenge headteachers if there is none.” (HMCI, December 2013)

5. Karen will share some observations from her Link Officer visits shortly This term – continued focus on improvements in the quality of teaching – is evidence triangulated? Is teaching improving? Progress and attainment of pupils to date – have targets been set? Are pupils on track? Effectiveness of actions taken? Opportunities Successful Teaching & Learning Programme (version of the ITP/OTP) Montpelier – starts 25 th Feb, Also a course will be held at Castlebar - see CPD online for details Inspection skills course – starts 31 st March Sustaining outstanding cluster pilot for all outstanding schools, hosted by Christ the Saviour Primary School – starts 21 st March. Deputy Heads’ network – 18 th March English Leader – secondment opportunity SEN quality first teaching 5-day course Good to outstanding seminar series – revised programme to start in the summer term. Deputy Heads’ Conference – 12 th June
