1 Sahel Food Crisis Strategy 2012 - 2015 Strategy Approval Meeting 31 st May 2012

2 Context  1984, 1998, 2005, 2010, Now  Over 18 million people affected across 8 countries (16m in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad - 10 million in 2010)  Chronic poverty  Cyclical drought and poor harvests  Livelihoods destroyed  Conflict (Mali, Nigeria)  Limited media coverage  No DEC appeal

3 Strategy Goal Capacity of communities in Sahel region are strengthened so that they are better prepared to cope with future food crisis. Purpose Comprehensive responses are carried out by partner organisations to address the immediate relief needs of local communities in the Sahel and enable them to recover and become more resilient. Partners and communities capacities are also built through the process.

4 2012 Response Emergency Activities:  Market gardening;  Grain banks;  Selling food at reduced prices;  Dykes and dams;  Agricultural training;  Cash for work
