2 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme About QA Focus QA Focus: Is funded by the JISC 5/99 programme Supports 5/99 projects Aims to ensure that projects have appropriate QA procedures which ensure that project deliverables comply with standards & best practices Provided by UKOLN and AHDS Staff: Brian Kelly, UKOLN (Project Manager) Hamish James, AHDS (QA Focus) Marieke Guy (neé Napier), UKOLN (QA Focus ) Note that during 2002 QA Focus was provided by ILRT and UKOLN

3 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme We: Liaise with projects over QA and interoperability issues (normally through project clusters) Provide advice on standards & best practices Encourage projects to document case studies of best practices (and difficulties experienced) - see Survey projects in order to profile community – see What We Do QA Focus works closely with the JISC (esp. the 5/99 programme team), with JISC Advisory Services and the projects themselves. 4 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme UKOLN and AHDS UKOLN and AHDS work will be based on the strengths of the two organisations: Advisory Roles: The JISC-funded UK Web Focus, Interoperability Focus posts and the Collection Level Description Focus & NOF Technical Advisory Service (UKOLN) together with AHDS's advisory role to the Arts & Humanities sectors Experiences In Providing Services: Including the RDN and AHDS's distributed services Links With The JISC And JISC Services: Development of the Information Environment, joint projects, …

5 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme Work To Date Web Compliance with HTML/CSS standards Tools for testing compliance Accessibility Compliance with WAI standards Tools for testing compliance Accessibility policies Digitisation QA for work flow for image digitisation HJ

6 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme Future Work (1) Areas of work for 2003 include: Digitisation: Building on work on images and extending to digitisation of text and multimedia Software Development: Approaches to software development Issues of deploying software in a service environment Metadata: Interoperability issues; cataloguing rules; etc.

7 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme Future Work (2) Of particular relevance to Jorum+: Addressing issues of deployment into service for project deliverables This may include deployment in area not originally envisaged when project were approved Areas may include: Deployment to JISC Services Deployment to institutions Archiving Access through additional delivery channels Deployment to learning repositories

8 QA Focus – Supporting JISC's 5/99 Programme QA Focus And Jorum+ QA Focus: Will be working with the Jorum+ team Will complement their work: Jorum+ team will support the repository applications QA Focus has an interest in broader repurposing issues Will seek to strengthen links with projects Will seek to provide a neutral broker between Jorum+ team and JISC Note that QA Focus's remit currently is for 5/99 projects
