1 Virtual Gain, No Pain! This resource has been produced as a result of a grant awarded by LSIS. The grant was made available through the Skills for Life Support Programme in 2010. The resource has been developed by managers and practitioners. The content should not be compared with commercially produced resources, although in many cases it may have comparable or better learning outcomes.

2 Essex County Council 2 What we did… Developed 10 units of an online Entry Level 3 Numeracy course which is to be accessed through the VLE

3 Essex County Council 3 Product developed 10 modules to support and develop E3 Numeracy skills in this priority area Module topic areas: Count and read numbers Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division Understanding fractions Rounding Equivalent fractions Decimals Add and subtract money Modules include: Worksheets which are uploaded for tutor marking and feedback Video clips Games Link to BrainGames Link to BBC Skillswise website Discussion forum

4 Essex County Council 4 Impact Increased engagement of learners including hard to reach cohort Learner reaction… Increased engagement and involvement of staff Raised awareness of online potential within our service – to include embedding Raised awareness of online potential outside our service Improve access to learning to a wider range and increased number of people. To develop our strategic aim in enabling learners from all curriculum areas to receive Numeracy & Literacy support

5 Essex County Council 5 Lessons learned Increased accessibility – ensuring language is accessible – looking at other methods of increasing access Reviewing and adjusting content – critical review Not making assumptions about learners as to who it is most suitable for Compatibility issues e.g. AOL Internet controls – e.g. NannyNet Learner IT skills

6 Essex County Council 6 Next steps… Develop remaining eight modules Analyse success rates of Level 2 and E3 courses to assess future strategic direction Develop courses at Level 1 Go live with full roll-out September 2010 Demonstrate course to own staff at Managers Development Day – July 2010 Demonstrate course to SfL Regional Network Forum – June 2010
