7 Initial assessment It will help identify a learners skills against a level or levels within the national standards for literacy or numeracy. It provides the information needed to decide a starting point for the learner. It is the benchmark from which learning progress can be measured. It can identify learners who may need extra support. 8 Most learners will require less time. A few may need a little more time. Assessors should look out for learners who appear to be having problems and invite them to stop. How much time will be needed? Skills for Life Support for World Class Skills

9 Initial assessments are not tests and are not timed. Learners should be encouraged to finish in their own time and not to rush. 50–60 minutes should be adequate. Skills for Life Support for World Class Skills

13 The purpose of the initial assessment and how the results will be used to help the learner. It is not a test and the results are confidential. Learners should answer as many questions as they can. 17 Mark the answers. Add up the learners total score. Use the table to find the level attained. Record total and level on the assessment. Give feedback on the results. Make sure the feedback is given one-to-one and in confidence. Skills for Life Support for World Class Skills
