1 People Need to Talk Inevitably, everyone has a problem that needs to be discussed with someone. Goals: Learn to acknowledge when we need to talk Understand the importance of talking Identifying knowledgeable, safe adults

2 Importance of Talking Above all, when you have a problem, you should talk with someone. A parent, a friend, or another adult of some kind. Emotional problems can emerge. Depression Suicide Everyday kinds of problems

3 I Can’t Talk to Mom / Dad! However, sometimes we have problems that we feel are too difficult to talk about with our parents. Parents might get angry. Not sure what their response will be. Too embarrassed or too scared. What do I do then???

4 Find a Trustworthy Adult Our friends are not always enough. They may provide the wrong / inaccurate advice They may not know what to do Some problems are so difficult that we need an adult to talk to. Talking to an appropriate trustworthy adult. They provide safety They provide wisdom / experience / knowledge They provide accurate advice

5 Recognizing When to Talk When should I talk with a trustworthy adult, other than my parents? When you are not comfortable talking with your parents. You’re not sure how to begin talking with your parents. When your parents’ reaction will be counter-productive. Depressed, Anxious, Suicidal, Pregnant, “In Trouble”.

6 Identifying Safe Adults Identifying safe and trustworthy adults Some adults have jobs that include helping kids / teens Someone who is a professional in the community Most importantly, you trust the adult. Identifying who to talk to when you have: Questions / concerns regarding sex, STDs, or pregnancy – school nurse Concerns regarding depression, anxiety, suicide – school counselor Many times, you can talk with a variety of people regarding many issues you face.
