4.  Come to school/class with notebooks updated, homework completed, pencil ready, etc. Expect great learning and it will happen!  Students need to constantly be reviewing the vocabulary. They should make flash cards (index cards) that they made of words they had trouble with. Pull them out when you are waiting at the doctor’s office, in the car, etc. Vocabulary seems to be the most difficult obstacle to understanding concepts. Don’t just memorize the definitions, use them in sentences, conversations, etc.  Make connections to everyday life with the science content. It really is going on all around us. 9. Students have completed their first focus lesson specifically having a global focus about North America. They worked in teams to discover why European languages are spoken in North American countries. They also matched flags and “Hello”, “Hola”, “Hej”, and “Bonjour” with the appropriate countries. Each student team was able to find at least one reason why explorers’ languages became the most often spoken language in parts of these countries, which is a great segue between pre-Columbian Native Americans and the Age of Discovery/Exploration.
