2. UTAA Mission Statement To engage alumni from all UT campuses in lifelong relationships with their University and with each other, to provide valuable programming and services, and to support the University’s core missions of teaching, research, and public services. 1

History of the UTAA 1836The first recorded meeting of alumni took place, including graduates of Blount College and East Tennessee College. 1874Alumni of East Tennessee University adopted the Alumni Association’s first constitution and by-laws. 1927Memphis division of the Alumni Association was established (Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Medicine Grads). 1953The Alumni Association establishes a scholarship program and awards 6 scholarships, valued at $100 each, to UT students. 1961Dues program was discontinued; all grads automatically considered members of the alumni association and given the opportunity to support UT by making a contribution to the annual fund. 2

History of the UTAA 1964Martin grads included in the UTAA. 1969The current UT System is established with merger of UT and Chattanooga. 2009The Alumni Association begins its first-ever strategic planning process. 2011On July 1, the Alumni Association along with the newly created 32-member Board of Governors moves under the UT Foundation, Inc. 3

5. Role of the UTAA The University of Tennessee Alumni Association represents graduates and former students of all the campuses and other friends of the University of Tennessee. To be eligible for membership in the Association, a person must have successfully completed a minimum of 24 semester hours at any University of Tennessee campus and no longer be affiliated as a full-time student. Total membership of the Association is approximately 335,000. 4

UTAA Programs and Activities The university-wide Office of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving coordinates all programs of alumni activities involving the total alumni constituency of the University of Tennessee. These would include: – Alumni Leadership Training – Alumni surveys/data collection – Annual Giving Program – Board of Governors – Career Services/Networking – Chapters – Communications/Publications (Tennessee Alumnus, online community) – Fundraising for UTAA (Fund for the Future) – Legislative Relations (Alumni Legislative Council) – Marketing/Affinity Programs – Scholarships – Tour and International Travel – Web Site/Presence for UTAA – Women’s Council 6

8. Campus Alumni Programs and Activities Each UT campus maintains an office of alumni affairs. The alumni offices in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin and Memphis develop campus-oriented programs for the alumni of their campus. These would include: – Advisory responsibilities to student groups – Away game events/receptions – Campus alumni council/board meetings and activities – Campus and college fund initiatives – Campus newsletters and publications – Class, college, and unit reunion activities – Class bequest programs – Continuing education programs – Referral services for alumni – Senior class gift programs – Special activities for various constituent groups – Student/alumni mentor programs – Student recruiting networks – Young alumni programs 7

UTAA Strategic Goals I.Build and sustain lifetime relationships with alumni through programs targeted to each segment of the alumni lifecycle in response to alumni market research, best practices, and ongoing analysis and measurements. II.Develop institutional advocacy and new investment to optimize centralized information management systems. III.Leverage existing communications resources and collaborations to focus and align communication strategies and messages that increase impact and support new and ongoing objectives for alumni engagement. IV.Realize strong advocacy for the UT system of higher education in Tennessee through an influential legislative relations program. V.Develop an Association financial model that ensures fiscal viability and supports sustained, consistent alumni engagement and programming. 9

14. In support of the Health Science Center during the 2012-13 academic year, the UTAA will provide: $136,000 in Scholarships $16,000 in Faculty Awards 13

UTFI History 2001 UTFI was created to support the University of Tennessee’s educational, research and public activities by securing and administering private funds to support programs beyond the scope of the University’s general budget. 2009 Foundation Study Committee appointed by the university of Tennessee Board of Trustees to research the structure and impact of foundations at peer institutions. 2010 The Foundation Study Committee presented its findings to the UT Board of Trustees, which approved the UT Foundation plan, its affiliation agreement, and proforma pending legislative approval. 2011 Legislative approval by the State of Tennessee 14

Benefits of a Foundation Within a foundation, a university can create the following:  A singular focus to raising private gifts for the benefit of UT  An opportunity to engage volunteer leaders and potential donors in a significant role for the university  A staffing and human resources structure appropriate for a major university development and alumni program Alternative (non-state funded) revenue sources are often used to increase the development and alumni affairs program Accept certain gifts that the university may not - gift annuities, certain real estate transactions Flexibility to operate more as a private business; rather than a government entity 15
