Friday, Nov. 16 th : “A” Day Monday, Nov. 19 th : “B” Day Agenda  Collect Review Worksheets  Collect completed KWL  Collect Concept Review  Chapter 3 Test  Lab Discussion and write-up We will be in the lab next time…  Homework: Finish popcorn lab write-up Work on mole project – due next time!

Ch. 3 Test “Atoms and Moles”  You may use your notes, the electron filling chart, a period table, a calculator, etc.  You may NOT use your book, homework or any quizzes… GOOD LUCK!  When you’re done with the test, pick up a lab handout and start reading it through…

Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn”  For this lab, you may choose your own lab partner.

Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn”  Make sure to update your table of contents with this lab before starting the lab write-up.  Remember the steps of the lab write-up: 1.Title 2.Purpose 3.Hypothesis 4.Materials 5.Procedure

Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn” Purpose  Popcorn pops when the internal water inside the kernel gets above 100°C, turns to a gas and rapidly expands.  Different types of popcorn have different amounts of internal water and will pop differently.  The purpose of this lab is to test 3 different types of popcorn to determine the percentage water contained in each.

Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn” Hypothesis  Which type of popcorn (beta, gamma or delta) do you think has the highest percentage of water? OR  Do you think there will be no difference in the water content of the three different types of popcorn?

Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn” Materials  You will need to actually pop the popcorn to determine the percentage of water it contains, so what kind of lab equipment will you need?  What type of container will you use to pop the popcorn?  You will use only one 250 mL beaker for all three samples of popcorn. The beaker will need to be cleaned out after each test because they get pretty nasty!

 How will you keep the popcorn from flying out of the container while it’s popping?  If you use foil, be sure to poke holes in the foil to let the steam escape.  What will you use to pick up the hot beaker?  Beaker tongs!  Should you put the hot beaker on the lab table?  No, put it on another piece of wire gauze to cool. Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn” Materials

 How many kernels should you pop at once?  20 kernels of each type of popcorn work best for each test.  You will need to add a dropper of vegetable oil to the beaker before you pop the popcorn.  Remember, when any type of food is brought into the lab, it becomes a chemical and CAN NOT be eaten! (It will probably be burned anyway!) Lab: “Conservation of Mass: Percentage of Water in Popcorn” Materials

Popcorn Lab Write-up  You have the rest of the period to work with your lab partner on the lab write-up: 1.Title 2.Purpose 3.Hypothesis 4.Materials To save time, I typed up 5.Procedure the materials/procedure so you don’t have to…

Popcorn Lab Data Table  This is the data table that you will complete: Technique Beta Technique Gamma Technique Delta Mass of 20 kernels (g) Mass of Beaker + oil + 20 kernels (before popping) (g) Mass of Beaker + oil + 20 kernels (after popping) (g) Mass of water in 20 kernels (g) % water in popcorn

Homework  Finish popcorn lab write-up  Finish mole project – due next time! Popcorn lab next time: be sure to wear proper footwear! Good Luck this weekend to musicians at the IMEA festival in DeKalb!
