FEEDBACK PLEASE

UWG Feedback Summary Action #1 (LIKES) SUMMARY 6 Categories is a good starting point Well organized Nice pretty layout Easy to navigate Easy to find data Animation of the month Information Tab contains all information needed for dataset. Speed of site is quick Dataset Information Layout Orange Tables pull-downs are helpful Topics and headings in pull-downs are comprehensive Search this site works well. Good indexing. Action #1 Please review the new web portal and provide your general thoughts about the layout, content and usefulness of the portal. Action #1 (DISLIKES) SUMMARY Front page looks busy Maybe confusing for first time users. Too many Block frames. Too many header banners. 3 separate search areas User needs to be knowledgeable of exact key word to enter in Search Field in order to get many matches. Is the Right column needed? Put below. Overwhelm users with too many returned datasets. 2 places to locate other data centers and communities Data Discovery vs Dataset Discovery (what's the difference?) Radar under Parameter.. But it's not an ocean parameter but a sensor Fix Broken links in Pages. 'Ocean Optics' has MODIS SST, and Chlorophyl A Sea Surface Topography' were GDR contains SSH, Significat Wave height Soils' may be soil mosture or land water Confused over 'Click' or wait for a 'Hover'.. For FACET vs Top Navigation Orange pop down menu is persistent in Firefox (does not go away) got annoying. But Safari worked just fine. At the Top navigation NASA Earth Data Navigation -> Data Discovery -> Real-time.. PO.DAAC link doesn't seem relevent, unlike LANCE. Type-o http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/OceanSurfaceTopography/OSTM-JASON2, launched June 20, 2008 and began data collection on July 12, 1008. Missing link in http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/SeaSurfaceTemperature (For details about the layering of the top 10m of the ocean click here). Action #1 (RECOMMENDATIONS) SUMMARY Level 1 data type should be for experts and L2 and L3 are usable by wider audience. No coherent order Don't mix expert level data and general user data. Different Level of datasets listing should be carefully partitioned using separate tabs. Pretty interface but doesn't make access to data any easier than FTP. Make it simpler (easy to navigate) and less pretty. Most important pages: Download Data, Description of Data and Projects. Make Navigation Bar selection more prominent than 'Browse Datasets' Include Global Dataset in Spatial coverage list. Top Navigation Bar topics should be links and not animated drop down menu. (ie. Dataset discovery, data access, measurements..) Action #1 Please review the new web portal and provide your general thoughts about the layout, content and usefulness of the portal.

UWG Feedback Summary Action #2 Please review the Mission and Measurement Pages. 1. Are they useful? Complete? 2. Is there additional information that should be added? Action #2 (DISLIKES) SUMMARY Ocean currents & circulation shows no current mission. Altimeter missions are still arguably ocean circulation missions as well as SST. Missions Met-OP and GHRSST under NASA/PODAAC? Not expecting this. Some mission descriptions are very long (AVHRR) Other mission pages have little to no data or ancillary information Aqua limited set of information. Does not note failure of AMSR-E OSTM missing link from http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/OceanSurfaceTopography/OSTM-JASON2 … ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/allData/ostm/preview/L2/docs/ostm_cyclelist.txt Action #2 (LIKES) SUMMARY Easy to Navigate Useful and finds list complete Some mission pages are complete with nice data links OSTM is comprehensive Likes how sea-ice has related links. Action #2 (RECOMMENDATIONS) SUMMARY What is the concept of Mission (better definition) is GHRSST a mission or measurement Should ADEOS-II be SeaWinds Why are there Aqua, Terra, and MODIS under missions. Would like to see related missions section (NSCAT shows ASCAT, QuikSCAT etc..) Templates in mission and measurements need to be consistent/uniformed Automatically include announcements from other feeds (ie. OSTST). Eg. Jason 1's safe hold information. Related links should link back to mission descriptions. Mission link at top navigation should go to a page similar to measurements that summarizes the options Ocean wind, QuikSCAT mission needs to be brought up to date Action #2 Please review the Mission/Measurement Pages. 1. Are they useful? Complete? 2. Is there additional information that should be added?

UWG Feedback Summary Action #3 (DISLIKES) SUMMARY Forum is not useful Not clear if what was clicked was either private or public. Color scheme may indicate not active for access. Low number of posts indicates not busy place. Forum watch post cannot click on icon. Is this suppose to send email to user if they want to see the posts from this forum Action #3 Please review the Forums. 1. Are they useful? 2. How could they be improved upon? Action #3 (LIKES) SUMMARY Likes the concept of FORUM. NO real posts to determine if forum is useful though. Likes the forum idea Action #3 (RECOMMENDATIONS) SUMMARY Add OST forum Request for comments on potentional new instruments (SWOT. Scatterometer) Add PDFs, presentations at science team meetings. List of related poublications. Post answers to recent help desk questions. Accesing processing problems. Link Forum topics from mission pages Highlight forum like the rest. Currently only accessible once at front page. Successful forums need a critical mass. Forum can be excellent excellent and would add value to the portal by alerting PO-DAAC to issues (e.g. of latency in real-time data sets) and exchanging code and best practice between users external to PO-DAAC. Action #3 Please review the Forums. 1. Are they useful? 2. How could they be improved upon?

UWG Feedback Summary Action #4 From the home page, use the “Browse Dataset” section to locate two or more datasets familiar to you. Please Answer the following questions: 1. Were you able to easily navigate to the relevant Dataset Information pages? If not, what problems did you experience? 2. Comment on the usability of the navigation options (facets)? 3. Did the Information Tab contain all the information you require to utilize the dataset? 4. Were you able to easily access the data? Action #4 (DISLIKES) SUMMARY Information tab did not provide all the info required to utilize dataset. Would like to see a table of variables (possibly in the data access location). No Obvoius README me file to read for level of Directories in access. Directory/filenames confusing. Search for water vapor and dataset discovery returned maps of water vapor concentration from radiometer data. This is an expert product and general user might be misled by the way it's described in the browse section. Asked grad student to download L3.5 CCMP wind product toook a long time.. Due to directory structure… didn't know can drag folder to desktop to get data. README file should've included this infomration in the main directory. Search for GRACE data and returned OSCAR surface currents. First thing to return should be GRACE GSM products. Platform search useless if primary products of search is returned in a lower order. Search area (GRACE CSR, GRACE GFZ) returned 0 datasets. Selecting a dataset (GRACE Monthly Geopotential Spherical Harmonic Coefficients GFZ Release 4.0 Unconstrained (GSM)) missing values for variables. Daily file labeling for OSCAR will need to be more obvious to users. OSCAR handbook is linked at the bottom… best to link at front and center since everything is explained at length in the handbook Not sure how useful table view is. Was expecting the Browse Dataset buttons to take user to the Dataset Discovery tool Journal reference is not how to cite use of these data. A citation note that unambiguously indicated this dataset in the catalog – for experimental reproducibility – would be nice. Looking for REMSS.. Quoted latency is 24 hours but no data since Feb 24, 2012 But, in the latency “historical data” the “sort by” stop date returns no datasets. Perhaps the database is not actually configured to support this. Looking under parameter | sea surface topography | then searching for keyword “Jason-2” I get nothing. All Datasets›Latency: HISTORICAL choosing sort Stop date. Page 1 returned no datasets. Page 2 and on returned datasets. Enter Dataset Keyword in already selected facets… but entering a keyword here searches the entire DB. Should only be within the datasets returned in the list. Action #4 (LIKES) SUMMARY Dataset Discovery.. Navigation easy. Facets work well Accessed data via FTP Like the Navigation Space and Time and Sensor Information tab contained all information required to utilize the dataset Was able to access the data (single files though) but did not try wget or mass access protocol. Likes the browse dataset panel, sort functionality, contact a data engineer, Action #4 (RECOMMENDATIONS) SUMMARY Search forum need basic search criteria ex: list posts by certain post date, topic, or author Would like to elimnate datasets that do not span desured time range. Global coverage should be included in regional dataset selections. Need README file in the main directory of the dataset. Currently only available in DOCS directory. List of results.. Previous / Next should also be at the bottom of the page. Or increase the number of datasets returned for each page. Each mission page helpful to list the most commonly-downloaded datasets separately.. Rather than a link to data search return for Browse Datasets for GRACE data. Allow user to insert the start/end times, and collect all data of ONE filetype in between, as a zipped file. Provide README files describing the file name convention of dataset. Example: GSM- 2_2008275-2008306_0030_EIGEN_GM60_0004.dif” and couldn’t immediately tell what dates that represented (esp. because of the use of DOY) Overall, while your site presumably includes a whole lot of data, I don’t find it well organized. I keep imagining some poor new grad student getting told by his professor, “Go get the T/P data over the Atlantic from 1990-1992 so we can test this,” and getting to the site and being totally confused about what data he was actually supposed to download. The site looks pretty, but I’m sorry, it’s just not very effective at organizing and explaining data sets. Provide links to handbook from README files in the FTP site. User SCENARIO. 1) see what data is available, 2) see details on what to choose, 3) pick a time and region to download, 4) make sure I understand what I’m getting, and as a bonus 5) quickly preview the data and pick out a specific time and region (versus a big file with global data or a year’s worth of data, etc). Action #4 From the home page, use the “Browse Dataset” section to locate two or more datasets familiar to you.

UWG Recommendation (Data Organization on new Web-Portal) Make facetted filters functionality more evident: “filter dataset list” color coated Amazon (orange text for categories) E-bay (roll over mouse gives background shade on selection) tutorial (learn more) button for novice Expand facetted filters functionality allow “>”, “<“, range searches for temporal/spatial searches allow multiple selection Provide metrics on usage to justify reduction of similar products GHRSST L4 Improve sort accuracy by Popularity does not align with UWG’s expected results for scientific discovery. by Spatial/Temporal, spatial resolution -> grid spacing. by Stop Date return the most recent first. (advantage for Nowcast/Forecast users) by Latency (adv. To Nowcast/Forecast users) Make dataset comparison table functionality more evident.

UWG Recommendation (Web Portal) Maintain consistency and accuracy on data information pages. Fix broken links Check accuracy of “known issues” (eg. Altimetry) Include consistent description for each dataset orbit info, known issues Inter-DAAC inter-operability NSIDC (cryosphere DAAC) -> PODAAC sea-ice portal OBPG (ocean color DAAC) -> PO.DAAC ocean color portal Forum Post past and new user inquiries along with correspondence eg. OBPG Organize by topics Link FROM known issues pages TO Forum
