2 Hardships in the War ● Underprepared- Training could only do so much ● Fear - Soldiers knew they could die at any time, especially if they were crossing an open field or storming a beach under heavy enemy fire ● Boredom - soldiers with free time often felt homesick and lonely. Many men fought these feelings by writing letters to home.

3 The G.I. Bill, was a law that provided benefits for returning World War II veterans. Benefits included low-cost mortgages, low-interest loans to start a business, expenses to attend university, as well as one year of unemployment compensation. It was available to every veteran who had not been dishonorably discharged; combat was not required. World War II veterans unemployment compensation -Delays caused many G.I.’s to have to pay on their own -Some lived in their cars or on the street -Many went into major debt -Some didn’t get the reconciliation they thought they deserved Hardships in the community

4 Opportunities ●Officially the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, the G.I. Bill was created to help veterans of World War II. It established hospitals, made low-interest mortgages available and granted stipends covering tuition and expenses for veterans attending college or trade schools. ●the GIs would form strong bonds with their comrades as they fought together ●When the GIs returned home they had a newfound respect themselves and their country. ●It established veteran hospitals for vocational rehabilitation made low-interest mortgages available and granted stipends covering tuition and living expenses for veterans attending college and trade schools

5 Key Content Terms GIs - Government issued, when the soldiers had GI soap, GI socks, GI helmets, and a GI rifle. Thats the reason why the soldiers were called GIs. GI cans - What American soldiers referred too as artillery shells.
