Bits and Peeking Sample Brain Slides Lets begin by choosing a theme or background

Brain Topics Erase this button and create a menu for these slides here Like writing an abstract, this is actually the last thing we’ll do

Parts of the Brain

Major Structures of the Hindbrain Medulla oblongata –Controls the vital functions of the body –maintains blood pressure –regulates heart rate –regulates breathing Reticular formation –Involved in –Arousal –Attention Cerebellum –Coordinates movement –Involved in timing Locus coeruleus –Directs your attention There’s way too much text Cut it to what you’d need in a lecture You may choose to put this information on a couple of slides, rather than just this one Then add a photo or some other visual element

Major Structures of the Forebrain Cerebral cortex –Processes complex information Suprachiasmatic nuclei –Maintain circadian rhythms Striatum & substantia nigra –Coordinate smooth movement Corpus callosum –Connects left and right hemispheres Thalamus –Relays and processes sensory signals Another overfull slide Cut it as needed or break it across a couple of slides Then add a photo or some other visual element

Major Structures of the Forebrain: The Limbic System Amygdala –Involved in emotion Hippocampus –Formation of memories –Affected by Alzheimer’s disease Hypothalamus –Regulates drives Septum –Pleasure –Anger suppression You know what to do with this one Perhaps it might be nice to find a video to go with one of the points

Anatomical Areas of the Cerebral Cortex Each hemisphere is into four lobes: Frontal Parietal Occipital Temporal Divided by Gyri (ridges) Sulci (valleys) A picture of the brain might be really nice here You might even animate an arrow to the various areas when they appear, if you animate the text Or perhaps a video of someone looking at a brain and pointing out this stuff You might even think about shooting your own videos for some of your slides

Functional Areas of the Cerebral Cortex Motor cortex Controls movement Sensory cortex Receives sensory information Association cortex Integrates information Wernicke’s area Language interpretation Broca’s area Language organization Speech production You know what to do here

Motor & Somatosensory Cortices Motor cortex –Moves parts of the body –Areas controlling movement of neighboring parts of the body occupy neighboring parts of the motor cortex Somatosensory cortex –Receives sensory input from body parts –Areas receiving input from neighboring body parts are near one another in the sensory cortex You know what to do

Lateral Dominance in Normal Brains Hemispheric Differences – Left: logical abilities language abilities – Right: spatial abilities artistic abilities musical abilities facial recognition – There is some individual variability in the precise nature and degree of lateralization – Differences should not be exaggerated Because the corpus callosum allows the two hemispheres to work closely together You know what to do here

Split-Brain Studies This is an apparatus used for studying split-brain patients – It presents image to selected visual field If an image shows up in the left visual field: – The participant can name the object If an image shows up in the in right visual field: – The participant cannot describe the object in words – The participant can pick the object out of a group Find a video or image on the web for this Remember to clean up the excessive text
