The corn was sold at market prices so people could not buy it and they still starved. Lord Russell chose to not send corn to Ireland because he felt people grew other crops. He did not know that they had to be exported to Britain. People did not have work, money or food which resulted in people dying.

In 1846 lots of people still emigrated. They emigrated because they could not find work in Ireland. A ticket for the ship costed 3 pounds The Quakers helped but there was an increase in emigration.

If you did not pay your rent you were evicted from your home Lots of people were evicted from their homes and left at the side of the road Their houses were burnt down

When workhouses first opened very few people visited them. However as food became more and more scarce many people over came their dislikes of workhouses. Soon workhouses became packed as people desperately tried to find food and shelter.

1847 was known as black 47 A hard winter in 1847 made conditions even worse. A horrible disease called typhus spread across Ireland. Soup kitchens were established in winter of 1847.
