No longer content to be images of the generation ahead of them, WANTED CHANGE Changes affected education, values, lifestyles, laws, and entertainment.

3 Youth Toys Surfers wanting to stay in shape turned to Skateboarding Barbie introduced in 1959, followed by G.I Joe Trolls “Slot Cars” – Toy cars

4 Music 1960, Elvis returned to the music and other 1950s artists America, however, was ready for a change. More Rock specializing in rhythm and blues –The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations Bob Dylan helped bring about folk music revival The Beach Boys appealed to high schoolers The Beatles, from England, burst into US

5 1960's began with Crew Cuts on men and bouffant hairstyles on women. Casual plaid/button down shirts on men, knee length dresses for women Fashion – Early Sixties

6 Fastion – Mid/Late Sixties Mid-decade: Miniskirts or hot pants often worn with go go boots women's hair was either very short or long and lanky. Men's hair became longer and wider Jeans became a staple in fashion

7 The Art Rise of Pop Art – bring art into the mainstream Famous Artist – Andy Warhol

8 The Counter Culture A Rebellion from Conventionalism Generally white middle class college youths Known as “Hippies” Goal: create a setting of “Peace, love, and harmony” –Sometimes called “age of Aquarius” Eventual collapse – drug use/lack of organization, a couple of violent events

9 Hippie chic Long hair for men and women Clothing became part of self- expression Loose, “ethnic” styles Hand made, embellished items Sexual, colorful, nonconformist
