Introduction Proliferation of wireless technologies, mobile computing devices, and the Internet has fostered a new growing interest in location-aware systems and services Proliferation of wireless technologies, mobile computing devices, and the Internet has fostered a new growing interest in location-aware systems and services

Objective To develop an indoor location system based on Bluetooth. To develop an indoor location system based on Bluetooth.

Technologies and Related Work Infrared – Active Badge Infrared – Active Badge a tag in the form of an Active Badge that emit a unique code IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) – RADAR IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) – RADAR indoor(~20 m - ~50 m), outdoor(~100 m-~5000 m) indoor(~20 m - ~50 m), outdoor(~100 m-~5000 m) Bluetooth Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology Bluetooth is a standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range, based on low- cost in each device. 7 Different approaches ( indoor locating system ) Wi-Fi (wireless Ethernet ) Wi-Fi (wireless Ethernet )Ethernet Bluetooth Bluetooth

Wi-Fi trade off Expensive hardware Expensive hardware Higher power consumption Higher power consumption Wi-Fi is a replacement only for local area network access. Wi-Fi is a replacement only for local area network access.local area networklocal area network Wi-Fi requires more configuration Wi-Fi requires more configuration

Bluetooth trade off Slower connection Slower connection Limited range from the base station Limited range from the base station Lower security than Wi-Fi Lower security than Wi-Fi

Frequency Ranges They use the same frequency range, but employ different modulation techniques They use the same frequency range, but employ different modulation techniquesfrequency rangefrequency range Wi-Fi use higher power which resulting in a stronger connection. Wi-Fi use higher power which resulting in a stronger connection. Bluetooth use lower power resulting in lower connection ( still good for indoor applications ) Bluetooth use lower power resulting in lower connection ( still good for indoor applications )

Advantages Non-line-of-sight nature. Non-line-of-sight nature. Bluetooth exists in many products, such as telephones, printers, modems and headsets Bluetooth exists in many products, such as telephones, printers, modems and headsets Can be read in less than 100 milliseconds. Bluetooth simplifies the discovery and setup of services between devices Bluetooth simplifies the discovery and setup of services between devices Bluetooth allows multiple devices to communicate with a computer over a single adapter Bluetooth allows multiple devices to communicate with a computer over a single adapter Cost-effectiveness Cost-effectiveness

Equipment Reader (Server) Reader (Server) Range up to ~100 meters Range up to ~100 meters Can communicate with up to 7 active devices and up to 255 inactive devices Can communicate with up to 7 active devices and up to 255 inactive devices Support (function of distance) Support Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). (function of distance) Operate at the frequency of 2.4 GHz to 2.4835 GHz range Operate at the frequency of 2.4 GHz to 2.4835 GHz range Administrator (Client) Administrator (Client) Receive signal, which consists of a unique 7-character ID, every X seconds for identification Receive signal, which consists of a unique 7-character ID, every X seconds for identification Algorithm computation

Description of algorithm Servers ( Readers ) Servers ( Readers ) Client (Administrator) Client (Administrator) Tag (Bluetooth kit) Tag (Bluetooth kit) SERVER CLIENT Tag

Basic Operation The server emits radio signal to sense the tag (mobile, or any Bluetooth kit), generate a log file The server emits radio signal to sense the tag (mobile, or any Bluetooth kit), generate a log file and sort the discovered tags with: Address Address Services Services Signal strength ( RSSI ) Signal strength ( RSSI ) Every X seconds the server will transmit the log file to the Admin. 15 Conclusion We have introduced a system that locate mobile devices in indoor environments We have introduced a system that locate mobile devices in indoor environments, the system use the RF provided by a Bluetooth network. The system is based on the signal strength received that is transmitted to a central client where the data analyzed and the location is determined.
