SEMINAR ON Fuel Cell www.engineersportal.in

What is a fuel cell? A fuel cell is a device that generates electricity by a chemical reaction. Every fuel cell has two electrodes, one positive and one negative, called, respectively, the cathode and anode. The reactions that produce electricity take place at the electrodes. In a fuel cell hydrogen is provided and oxygen is present in air When the hydrogen and oxygen in the fuel cell is converted into water, electricity is produced in the process this electricity comes in the form of a direct current voltage that can power electric motors which in turn drive the wheels of a vehicle www.engineersportal.in

Types Of Fuel Cell www.engineersportal.in

Location Of Fuel Cell Kit In a Car www.engineersportal.in

New Mercedes Benz reports on use of two fuel-cell cars in the City of Sacramento. The cars, have a range of 100 miles and produces 88 horsepower Mercedes Benz On Fuel Cell www.engineersportal.in

REFUELLING A CAR www.engineersportal.in

Refueling step 1  After the car arrives at the respected stations, the numeric code is entered on the touch screen.  Each station has an unique numeric code so that the system can be operated only by the required person www.engineersportal.in

Step 2  After entering the code, the box containing the hydrogen noozle is electronically unlocked  The fuel stations are similar to the conventional fuelling stations except it contains hydrogen as a fuel www.engineersportal.in

Step 3  After the noozle is unlocked the attendant can the refuell the vehical  The diameter of the noozle is same as that of fuelling slot and contains a threaded way so that the noozle is inserted completely  This ensures o% leakage. It has to be achieved since leakage causes a drastic hazard www.engineersportal.in

Step 4  After the noozle is attached a twist is given to the hose which produces a light sound. This ensures that the noozle is inserted properly  After the noozle has been attached the fuel starts flowing automatically as per the pre decided filling parameter www.engineersportal.in

Fork lifts on fuel cell  As we are aware that fork lifts are the material handling devices which are capable of transporting the material from one part on a shop floor to other  The fork lifts that uses conventional fuels or batteries are not powerful and of less capacity and hence can only be designed for low load applications www.engineersportal.in

A view of conventional fork lift www.engineersportal.in

Using a fuel cell in fork lift  Provides a tremoendous boost in efficiencey  Decreases the maintainance cost upto 1.5 times  Eight times lesser refulling  More cost effective then batree type  Lower labour cost www.engineersportal.in

Firms adopting this technology:-  B.M.W. Automobiles ltd. (For BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle®manufacturing plant) BMW Manufacturing estimates they will avoid 1.8 million kilowatt hours per year of electricity consumption at the plant that would have been used to charge a battery- powered fleet. BMW Manufacturing estimates they will avoid 1.8 million kilowatt hours per year of electricity consumption at the plant that would have been used to charge a battery- powered fleet. www.engineersportal.in

Contd…  Coco cola refreshments ltd.  (for its 250,000 sq. ft. bottling and distribution center in San Leandro, California.)  They will also reduce the facility's electrical consumption approximately 1.6 million kWh per year.  Coca-Cola already has 40 fuel cell forklifts at its Charlotte, North Carolina, bottling facility. www.engineersportal.in

Contd…  WinCo Foods LLC  Kroger Co  United Natural Foods  U.S. Foodservice www.engineersportal.in

Electrolysis Pollution Free Less costly then direct chemical path Efficient Clean Operation www.engineersportal.in

Advantages  50 percent more fuel efficient than conventional gasoline engines  Up to 400-mile range  Virtually emission-free - the primary emission is water  Quieter operation  Lower maintenance - few moving parts  Operates at ambient temperatures www.engineersportal.in

Drawbacks  Hydrogen has a very low storage density  It is more expensive  It is highly inflammable  It has high explosive range in air www.engineersportal.in
