Mistreatment of a child by a parent or guardian, including neglect, beating and sexual molestation (www.dictionary.com)www.dictionary.com Child abuse is the physical, emotional or sexual abuse or neglect of children. While most child abuse happens in the child's home, large numbers of cases of child abuse have been identified within some organizations involving children, such as churches, schools, child care businesses, and residential schools. 4 10/21/20154 Causes of child abuse Many child abusers are actual victims of child abuse themselves Mental illnesses: bipolar, manic depression, multiple personality disorder, etc. Unforeseen circumstances that put families under stress: poverty, divorce, sickness, disability, lack of parental skills, drugs, etc.

5 10/21/20155 Effects of child abuse Child abuse can have direct consequences on someone’s childhood and adulthood. Vary according to how severe the abuse is and what the surrounding environment is. A child can have a healthier outcome if under great care of school and society. On the other hand, abused children can develop psychiatric problems.

Emotional effects: low self-esteem, depression and anxiety, eating disorders, personality disorders, relationship difficulties, etc. Physical effects: physical disabilities, death, etc. Behavioral effects: teen pregnancy, suicide attempts, problems in school and work, crime, aggressive behavior, further child abuse, etc.

7 10/21/20157 Prevention There are 3 levels of prevention Primary Prevention: activities at the community level such as: public education, parent education, etc. Secondary Prevention: activities toward families that have potential child abuse: parent education classes, home visiting programs for new parents or single parents, etc. Tertiary Prevention: activities toward families that have history of child abuse. This may include court supervision.
