The CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Circulation  Your body resembles a large roadmap, There are routes or “blood vessels” that take you downtown to the “heart” of the city.

3 Major Parts of the Circulatory system Blood – circulatory fluid - carries important “ *stuff ” through body Blood Vessels – transports blood throughout the body (like roads in a city) Heart – pumps (beats) to push blood through the blood vessels * Stuff – includes like oxygen, nutrients, & waste products CO 2

1. Your Blood is made of: Plasma –Liquid part of blood Red Blood Cells –They carry oxygen to all parts of the body

White Blood Cells –Fight and kill germs that may enter your bloodstream

Platelets –Form “scabs” when you cut yourself –Helps stop the bleeding

2. Blood Vessels : are like One Way Streets Blood Vessels resemble very long and skinny tunnels that are found all throughout your body.

3 Types of Blood Vessels ArteriesCapillariesVeins * Click on each blood vessel to explore its function in circulation

3. The Heart –4 chambers ( or compartments ) 2 upper chambers : Left Atrium Right Atrium 2 lower chambers : Left Ventricle Right Ventricle

We are amazing on the inside as well as the outside. These wax models were made in the 19th Century to teach surgeons and medical students human anatomy and physiology. They are now viewed by the millions in the Medical Science Wing of Vienna's great Natural History museum. The heart you see is surrounded by the lungs and underneath is the diaphragm. We are amazing on the inside as well as the outside. These wax models were made in the 19th Century to teach surgeons and medical students and we can be glad they had them. They are now viewed by the millions in the Medical Science Wing of Vienna's great Natural History museum. The heart you see is surronded by the lungs and underneath is the diaphram. The big red tube sticking up is the venacava and the tube with the stripes is the aorta. Luckily my spouse is a doctor and helps me name the parts right. It fasninating to see these up close and reminds me how fragile and complex are bodies are. Take care of that heart you need to do lots of loving with it. Blessings.

Human heart is about the size of a fist Right atrium Left atrium Right ventricle Left ventricle Heart – Exterior View

Inside the Heart Heart – internal view

Blood Flow through the Heart Blood with little oxygen is pumped from the Right Atrium  through a valve  Right Ventricle  through a valve  Pulmonary Artery. The Pulmonary Artery sends it to the Lungs to pick up Oxygen. Blood returns to the heart through the pulmonary veins. Pulmonary veins carries oxygen- rich blood  Left Atrium  through a valve  Left Ventricle  through a valve  Aorta. The Aorta is a series of branches that sends oxygenated blood throughout the body. Right atrium Right ventricle Left atrium Left ventricle aorta Pulmonary artery

Lub LISTEN to your heartbeat- it makes a lub dub sound. The lub is when blood is pushed out of the heart into the body and the dub is the reloading of the heart with more blood ready to push it out to the body Watch the animation – click the link Dub http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71olG7fyOCI
