3 Initial Steps n Selecting a Program Model –peer mediation cadre programs –whole school programs n additional student training n additional staff training n curriculum infusion n parental involvement –Community-linked programs n cadre linked programs n peace and safety networks

4 Initial Steps n Criteria for Selecting a Program Model –congruence with goals –fit with resources –fit with time frame –expectations for the future

5 Administrative Support n Support for the values of the program n finding necessary resources n consistency in supporting program n flexibility in coordinating and implementing program n strategic planning to avoid crisis management

6 Training and Curriculum Quality n Qualifications of Training Organization –select a reputable training organization –experience in schools –high standards –emphasis on program implementation support not just initial training n Follow national standards n Field Tested Curricula

7 Site Leadership Team n Clarify commitment in terms of time and energy n make sure they are knowledgeable about mediation and conflict n help them operate as an effective team –clarify roles and redsponsibilities –set expectations for accountability –structure regular interactions

8 Teacher and Staff Support n Plan for several orientations sessions n Provide them knowledge about mediation and conflict n Manage their expectations for the program n Provide publicity and referral support for the program

9 Parental and Community Support n Be ready to negotiate parent’s roles n Don’t assume they share values of the program n Provide training and information to help them be effective n Consider impact on students n Provide them resources for participating

10 Parental and Community Support cont’d n Identify key stakeholders in the community n Help community define its interests in the program n Allocate time to negotiate community role n Be prepared for conflicts among segments of the community

11 Student Participation n Peer mediators –select peer mediators carefully –cross section, influence leaders n general population –provide incentives for participation –use multiple publicity approaches –don’t expect landslides overnight

12 Selecting Curriculum Infusion n What type of curriculum? (CR, SEL, ABE, mixture?) n Packaged or Created Curriculum? n How linked with other conflict programs? n Integrated or Independent? n Assume much longer implementation curve
