8 THESE INCLUDE: THESE INCLUDE: n Providing probation and remedial services to the court system n Brokering court-ordered community service labor n Collecting fines, costs and restitution to the victims of crime n Developing/administering grant projects n Administering the Criminal Justice Board

9 PROBATION AND COURT SERVICES PROBATION AND COURT SERVICES n ACS supervises and monitors the behavior of offenders who are deemed non-violent by the courts. n Who will benefit from probation n And not pose a risk to the community.

10 COURT SERVICES OFFICERS n Officers of the Court n State-certified n Hold at least four-year degrees, generally in criminal justice or counseling n Certified in criminal record processing, drug screening and crisis intervention n ACS supervises 300-400 offenders per year

11 FACTOID IN FY2000, IT COST $45-$50 PER DAY TO INCARCERATE AN OFFENDER AT THE LOCAL JAIL.... IN FY2000, IT COST $2.95 TO PLACE AN OFFENDER ON PROBATION SUPERVISION...

12 FACTOID IN FY 2000, 72% OF ACS’s BUDGET WAS DERIVED FROM STATE AND FEDERAL GRANT REVENUE

13 FACTOID IN FY 2000, 77% OF OFFENDERS PLACED ON PROBATION COMPLETED IT SUCCESSFULLY THIS WAS THE SECOND HIGHEST SUCCESS RATE OF THE 38 DISTRICTS STATEWIDE

19 FINES, COSTS AND RESTITUTION In FY 2000 alone, ACS collected over $30,000 in court costs, fines, and restitution to the victims of crime...

22 THE “CCJB” IS n A policy and advisory board for local criminal justice planning n Mandated by statute n One of 38 boards statewide

23 THE CCJB’S MEMBERSHIP IS: n Mandated By Statute n Appointed by the Board of Supervisors n Judges, Prosecutors, Local Government Officials, Law Enforcement, Adult and Juvenile Corrections, Education, Mental Health...

24 Some issues which the CCJB has been charged with addressing: n Juvenile Crime n Domestic Violence n Community Corrections n System Technology (Video Arraignment) n Jail Regionalization

25 Since its inception in 1995, CCJB Projects have: n Procured over a million dollars in state and federal grants n Formed a Domestic Violence Task Force and Hired a Resource Officer for Victims n Sent four members to National Institute of Corrections in Colorado for a week-long, all- expenses paid training

26 And the CCJB has also... n Sponsored a Juvenile Justice Training Institute which was featured at an international conference n Been featured as a model board at the Governor’s conference on crime n Automated the Office of Adult Court Services entirely with grant funds.

27 CRIMINAL JUSTICE BOARD OF THE YEAR In 1998, the Fauquier/Rappahannock CCJB was recognized by the state and the Virginia Criminal Justice Association as the most outstanding board in Virginia...
