Curriculum for Excellence Literacy ~ Writing ~ Tools for writing As I play and learn, I enjoy exploring interesting materials for writing and different ways of recording my experiences and feelings, ideas and information. LIT 0-21bLIT 0-21b I explore sounds, letters and words, discovering how they work together, and I can use what I learn to help me as I read and write. Writing Targets I am learning to… ……write simple postcards, posters, instructions and reports, with some help from the teacher. …use capital letters and full stops correctly. …form letters correctly and space words carefully.

Writing targets continued ….use some common linking words e.g. and, because, then …….spell simple words and some tricky words correctly.

Writing targets continued … write short personal stories, using wordbanks to help me. … use my imagination to write short stories, poems and storybooks. … undestand the Following terms and use them in my writing: letter, word, capital, finger space, full stop, sentence, exclamation mark, speech bubble.

Froggy Fingers! Ensure correct grip. Pencil grips. Triangular pencils.

Storywriting composing skills Stage 1 The drawing programme Drawing the human figure in a variety of contexts. This helps to develop hand – eye co-ordination.

Storywriting composing skills Stage 2 Scribed Stories The teacher or adult helper scribes the story under the picture e.g. I am playing with my friends in the swing park. This activity helps to develop a child’s compositional skills.

Storywriting composing skills Stage 3 Overwriting The teacher scribes the story and the child writes on top of the writing. I am putting on my mittens.

Storywriting composing skills Stage 4 Letter formation and story compostition The child is encouraged to add more detail to drawings. The teacher scribes the story. The child writes underneath the written story. I am putting on my mittens.

Storywriting composing skills Stage 5 Storywriting The child makes up and writes own stories using wordbanks and wordbooks to help with spelling. I like to eat pizza and bananas.

At home Provide materials and space for writing and drawing. Involve them in writing e.g. cards Let them see you writing e.g. shopping list! Praise their attempts. Encourage them to ‘tell the story’ of their pictures and scribe.
