1 The purpose of narrative… Narratives are used widely in our society to:  Report news  Tell anecdotes and stories  Share values (fables, myths, parables)  Explain our world (dreamtime stories) and pass on our heritage (songs, legends, myths, biographies)

2 In terms of the purpose of texts.. A narrative is primarily used to inform or entertain the intended audience

3 Genre By definition, genre is “a category of literary work” Genre may be defined with reference to any or all of the following features:

4 Social Features Name: the culturally recognized name for the text type; agreement among participants as to what category a text belongs to. Transmission: some genres are explicitly taught, e.g. business letters, book reports. Function: what the text is for; what social role it plays. 5 The broadest categories of genre Aristotle defined genre in the following 3 broadest categories: 1.Epic or narrative (combining a first person narrator with dialogue by characters).Epic 2.Lyric (spoken entirely by a first person narrator)Lyric 3.Drama (spoken entirely by characters).

6 Due to literary evolution… Over time as culture became more complex, more genres were created, giving the broad range of genres that exist tody, such as: Horror, comedy, tragedy, drama, romance, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, western, war etc…
