3 Gradually, we domesticated plants and animals based on our needs

4 + = New type of Collector Vavilov´s expeditions around the world showed the importance of diversity to genetic breeding. Beginning of plant genetic resource efforts

5 WHY ? Germplasm Exchange There is no country self-sufficient in genetic resources New pests (insects and diseases) Climate Change Preventive Breeding Existing variability is not enough

Give feedback to the genebank manager – it is important

7 Sharing a successful experience Germplasm Exchange Brazil imported the US soybean collection = 23.000 accessions Brazil imported the US rice collection = 17.000 accessions USA and Brazil = different rules Labex Genetic Resources = presence in US

9 Major Challenges we faced Germplasm Exchange Quarantine (need to be very well planned in advance) Availability of seeds and sample preparation (time) Justify why we requested the entire collections (soybean and rice)

10 Final Remarks Germplasm Exchange It is bureaucratic (phytosanitary certificate, legislations) It is possible Germplasm Exchange is IMPORTANT!!! Institutions – experience and capacity Benefits are well recognized MKTPlace – if the project includes germplasm exchange start dialogue ASAP
