Ethan Frome Sentence combining… The sentences on each slide need to be combined into one sentence.

Edith Wharton wrote Ethan Frome In Ethan Frome, the color red represents love. The color red is found in Mattie’s scarf, the ribbon in her hair, and the pickle dish.

The only two colors in the novel and red and shades of white. Wintriness dominates the landscape. The splashes of red are in direct contrast to what is normal in the book.

The unvarying winter parallels Ethan’s unvarying life. The brief flashes of red parallel the flashes of love that come into Mattie life. She herself wears two out of the three instances of red.

When the color red is present, Ethan’s existence is energized. The color red brings life to Ethan’s otherwise dead life. Ethan’s every day life, dominated by winter, is dead compared to his life when the color red is present.

The pickle dish is the only red item that isn’t a possession of Mattie’s. The pickle dish also gets broken. Ethan’s love and therefore the liveliness in existence, breaks as well.

The pickle dish belonged to Zeena. The hindrance to Mattie and Ethan’s love was also Zeena.

The pickle dish was the first red item to break. The breaking of the dish foreshadowed the ruin of Ethan and Mattie’s love. Once all the red things were gone, Ethan’s life returned to the deathlike state of winter.

Combine… Perhaps the pickle dish was the potential love of Zeena and Ethan. The dish irreparably broke. There was no more hope for their love.
