As the media industry becomes more fragmented, competition for a share of the audience becomes even more intense. Knowing who your target audience is and what makes the tick, is therefore increasingly important. Audiences are classified by media producers in order to construct their products to appeal to them.

5 TASK 1 – Audience Classifications

6 Audience Research Audience research is about investigating:
statistical data about the size and profile of the audience for a particular media product the extent to which potential audience members are aware of a particular media product or service What members of the target audience think about particular products and services and their patterns of behaviour and potential use of the patterns

7 Demographics Demographics Means the way in which an audience can be classified according to a range of different socio-economic and personal factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, social class, occupation, level of education and sexual orientation. Most companies involved in media research and production puts people into different categories according to what sort of job they do, and what kind of income the have. The scale makes some very broad assumptions

8 Psychographics Information about a persons lifestyle is also important to advertisers and media producers as it gives them important clues as to what interests they have, how much disposable income they are likely to have and what type of media products they are likely to be attracted to. EG people who hava an active lifestyle are likely to be interested in media products that reflect this, so they might read health related magazines, watch travel programmes and visit sports-related websites

9 REMEMBER All commercial media texts are constructed with a specific audience in mind, and media producers invest a lot of time, effort and money in trying to find out exactly what their target audience want from their media products.
