Plurals

When a noun names one person, place, thing or idea the noun is considered singular. When a noun names more than one person, place, thing or idea it is considered plural.

For most nouns, add s to form the plural. Singular cookie piece house laser tablet Clark Plural cookies pieces houses lasers tablets Clarks

For nouns ending in ch, s, sh, x, and sometimes z add –es to form the plural. Singular sandwich glass bush box waltz Thomas Plural sandwiches glasses bushes boxes waltzes Thomases

Add –s to form the plural of nouns that end in y when a vowel comes before the y. Singular chimney journey attorney survey Plural chimneys journeys attorneys surveys

Drop the y and add ies to form the plural of common nouns that end in y when a consonant comes before the y. Singular daisy activity company quality Plural daisies activities companies qualities

Add only –s to proper names that end in y to maintain the correct spelling of the proper name. Singular Bailey Bundy Plural Baileys Bundys

Form the plural of nouns ending in a vowel plus o by adding –s. Singular rodeo patio stereo Plural rodeos patios stereos

Form the plural of nouns ending in a consonant plus o by adding – es.
