2 Summary Of The Unit This unit explores the advantages and disadvantages of buying natural foods. Reading one focuses on the basic issues in buying organic or regular produce. Reading two extends the discussion of natural foods to other food products. When we shop for fruits and vegetables, we choose them for color,size,softness/hardness, smell and of course price. It is said by some people that some foods can change the mood you are in.

3 Vocabulary Vocabulary; Read the words and understand the meanings. They are from the same unit. Artificial …… not natural Ripen,,,,,,,, become ready to eat Vine,,,,,,, a plant that grow up and around a stick It’s worth it …… it will be useful, you will gain from it. Old fashioned …… not modern or new Fresh …….. not caned or frozen

4 Focus on more Vocabulary Cross out the word or phrase that is not related to the boldfaced word. Herbicides: insects,weeds,farms Ripe: yellow banana, green strawberry, red apple Vines: tomatoes,grapes,apples Natural: stone,wood,plastic Artificial: caramel color,monosodiam glutamate, carrot

5 Fresh: tomatoes from the cane, grapes off the Produce: potato,apple,soup It’s worth it: it will be a problem, it will be useful, you will gain by it Taste: bad,hard,fresh Old fashioned: milking cows by hand, separating eggs with an electric machine, planting corn with a stick Insect: bee,bird,fly

6 Focus on writing Audience, Content, and Tone In any kind of writing, audience refers to the people who read what you write. What you say-- content--and how you say it-- tone--will depend on your audience.

7 Tips on content Write about your audience needs to know. Write about what will interest your audience. Write about what will be appropriate for your audience. A letter to a friend will Probably be about everyday, personal things. A letter to a boss will probably be About professional things only.

8 Tips on Tone A letter to a close friend may have a lot of slang and may sound very casual. A letter to a teacher or a boss will not use any slang and will be more formal. When you write to a friend, you can express negative emotions like anger. When you write to a teacher, to a boss, or to people you don’t know, you should avoid expressing these emotions directly.

9 Grammar: Count and Non-Count nouns Count nouns refer to people or things that can be counted.They can be singular or plural.Use a or an before a singular count noun.Plural count nouns needs only –s or –es at the end of the word.Numbers can be used with count nouns. Examples: I need an onion. Do you want a cup of tea? I will buy some red tomatoes. These apples are red.

10 Non-count nouns refer to things that cannot be counted.Do not use a,an,or a number before non- count nouns.Do not add –s/-es to non-count nouns:they do not have a plural form. Examples: We have bread. I drink milk.He likes rice. I buy produce at the supermarket.

11 Use of some,any,and a lot of Some can be used with plural count nouns and non- count nouns in affirmative statements. Any can be used with plural count and non-count nouns in negative statements. A lot of can be used with plural count nouns and with non-count nouns. Examples: I need some onions. I need some milk. I don’t have any onions. I don’t have any milk. I need a lot of onions. I need a lot of milk.
