In the beginning of the story, the prince answers a knock on his castle door. An ugly, old lady was seeking shelter but he laughed and refused her because of her looks. She turned out to be a witch and cast a spell on him, a spell causing him to remain an ugly beast until someone was able to see through his looks and love him anyway. When Belle comes along, she is frightened of the Beast, just like everyone else is initially. This theme is a timeless theme that often occurs in many stories and movies.
