2. Summary Sam Collier was just a lonely orphan boy in the alleys of London, until he is called upon to the New World, and Sam can’t believe his luck. But as the trip becomes harder and harder, he quickly learns that the New World is unforgiving, and he is soon fighting for his life in the woods of the New World.

3. Theme #1 One of the themes is survival in the New World. Because Sam is trying to survive this unforgiving new place which the whole book is basically about. The winters, the Indians, the food shortages, they had so much to deal with until they worked out trades with the Indians. Sam begins to learn that he must survive to thrive in this new land.
