Social issues… (examples – good AND bad) Economic effects of the Internet Health issues of video games Environmental issues of dumping old PCs Ethical issues… Ethics in the use of Technology

5 Social Issues 1. What are the social issues associated with a particular IT development? 2. How did the IT development emerge? 3. Who are the stakeholders—individuals, institutions, societies who initiate and control the IT developments and are affected by them? 4. What are the advantages and disadvantages for the stakeholders? 5. What feasible solutions can be applied to overcome problems? 6. What is the social impact of the IT development on human life? This may include some or all of the following areas: economic, political, cultural, legal, environmental, ergonomic, health and psychological. 7. What are the social impacts on local and global communities?

6 Ethical Issues The analysis of ethical issues can be guided by answering the following key questions. 1. What are the ethical issues associated with a particular IT development? 2. Who is responsible? 3. Who is accountable? 4. What policies, rules or laws apply to the situation? 5. What are the alternative ethical decisions? 6. What are the consequences of these decisions?

7 Aims of the course Develop an understanding of (new) technology
Study human experience and behavior with IT Analyze and argue theories about the use of IT Develop an awareness of human attitudes and beliefs towards IT Understand social and ethical considerations in the use of IT at local and global levels

Reliability, Integrity, Security, Privacy and anonymity, Authenticity, Intellectual property, Equality of access, Control, Globalization and cultural diversity, Policies and standards, People and machines

9 Section 2 – IT Systems in a Social Context
Basics of hardware and networks, Applications, Communication systems, Integrated systems

10 Section 3 – Areas of Impact
Business and employment, Education, Health, Arts entertainment and leisure, Science and the environment, Politics and government

11 INTERNAL ASSESSMENT Portfolio of 3 essays (800 – 1000 words)
Higher Level (HL) Portfolio of 3 essays (800 – 1000 words) Portfolio extension based on 1 essay + interview (800 – 1000 words) Portfolio + extension (20% final grade)

12 ITGS EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT
Higher Level (HL) Paper 1 – 1 hour (20% final grade) Paper 2 – 2 hours (35% final grade) Paper 3 – 1 hour (20% final grade)

13 PAPER 3 Higher Level (HL) ITGS Paper 3 includes a compulsory case study. Case study is provided at the beginning of the 2nd year (H4 year). Students study the content, develop questions and ideas over the final year. Paper 3 (IB ITGS HL) is based on the studied case study.

14 COMMAND TERMS In ITGS, specific attention is paid to the ‘command terms’ which have clear definitions – verbs such as ‘explain’, ‘discuss’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘analyze’ are clearly defined by the IBO
