1 Introduction to our offer May 2010
Telecom Batteries Introduction to our offer May 2010

2 The main challenges for Batteries
Why are Batteries failing so early in many countries ? Exposure Typical Problems Solutions Battery Performance Low cost batteries have extremely low performance at high temperature and/or in cycling conditions. (typically ¼) Select right batteries depending on temperature and grid conditions . High Ambient Temperature Both Battery design life and Cycle life are reduced (Typ 50% at 30-35C) Temp Controlled Storage and Installation in Cooling Cabinet Repeated Power Outages Battery does not have time to recharge due to Repeated Cycles.State of Charge will decline and Batteries will dry out and fail. Use New Battery can fast recharge or operate in partial state of charge OverCharge Incorrect rectifer settings (ie Boost) can significantly shorten battery life. Battery is overheated (risk of Thermal runaway/ leaking) Design life reduced to 1/5. Review Rectifier settings or use Float Voltage recharge 3 Outperforming Solutions By 2010, 74% of mobile subscribers will live in emerging economies, and while they will only contribute 40% of global revenue (due to lower average revenue per user), they are among the most profitable given the lower cost of serving them Of the 30 fastest-growing telecom markets 10 are in Africa and the Middle East 8 are in Emerging Asia 71% will come from parts of the world with urbanization levels below 50% SiteStar: 10oC increase reduces life to half Long service life, low maintenance top priorityt to reduce costs Unique cooling technology – from the best BlueStar Grid power can be disabled up to 40% of day, on and off Frequent power outages (charging cycles) kills battery life BlueStar handles 3 times as many cycles than standard batteries BlueStar recharges 5 times faster than standard batteries GreenGiant: Diesel generator traditionally main power source Only 1,500 base stations worldwide are powered by at least one form of renewable energy Estimated that 500,000 new base stations will be deployed in the next 5 years. Of these at least 150,000 are likely to be suitable for solutions like GreenGiant 2

3 Electric AC Grids drive needs for different batteries
Stable AC Grids Float Battery No AC Grid Deep Cycling Battery Very Unstable Grids PSOC Cycling Battery Source: NASA GSFC 40% of the worlds population lives with no electricity or with unstable electric grids

4 Telecom Products Range

NorthStar products are now recognized as best in class performance batteries and are now used in thousands of Telecom sites in more than 120 Countries in the world. The recent launch of Blue Technology has been used to develop new product that meets the harsh requirements of the emergent countries. Stable Grid Unstable Grid Off Grid

5 NorthStar Superior Technology
Thin-plates = more plates per cell = increased surface area Minimal spacing between plates, typically <1mm Very low internal resistance, hence: High volumetric power density High gravimetric power density Rapid recharge capability (no current limit) Superior Low Temperature Performance Very high pack compression High Cycling Capability NorthStar PPO Plastic Technology Designed for long and reliable life in any condition Premium Plastic Standard Plastics NorthStar PPO PC/ABS ABS PP Halogen free V0 Yes No High temp (65°C) sustainability Ability to be left beyond end-of-life without degrading No  Ability to maintain high pack compression with minimum deflection ***** **** *** * Material cost **

6 NSB Red Technology NSB Red Star TechnologyTM using Pure Lead has been developed to provide exceptionally long float life for telecommunication applications under stable AC grid conditions. Design float life of 20°C 2.27VPC High energy density Non-halogenated V0 plastic container and lid Stable up to 65°C Twin venting port Available Q4 2010 Dimensions Capacity /Ah Height /mm Width /mm Depth /mm NSB60 Red 263 108 287 60 NSB92 Red 264 396 92 NSB100 Red 100 NSB100X Red 110 520 NSB150 Red 320 125 283 150 NSB180 Red 560 180

NSB125 NSB 155 FT NSB 170 FT NorthStar Battery has recognized the need to develop an advanced alloy for improved performance of battery during and beyond service life in harsh environnments

8 NSB Blue Technology – Designed for Unstable Grid
Easy and Safe Set up No Boost Voltage required - No Full recharge required after each cycle - PSOC Capable Faster recharge High cyclic capabilities - Up to 2500 cycles at 25% DOD How To manage Unstable Grid ? Increase recharge power or use “controlled” boost voltages is not a practical solution. It is difficult to implement without risk of reducing battery life (Thermal runaway , over charge) There is a need for optimized lead technology with the ability to support Partial state of charge (PSOC) at a very high energy efficency Ability to operate in a low State of charge for extended periods . NSB 100 BLUE and NSB170 BLUE now available Up 2 to 3 Times more cycles than NSB Standard .

9 NSB Blue Technology – Designed for Unstable Grid
Fastest Float Recharge Standard AGM 22-hour recharge NBS Blue 2-hour recharge Blue Technology can repeatedly cycle in lower State of charge window utilizing full rectifier power Standard AGM needs to be recharged to >103%

10 Unstable Grid Field Trial - Bangladesh
Unstable AC Grid Outages In these conditions, Standard AGM will fail after few months. The Blue Battery has completed over 1800 cycles in 1 year of operation and is still working Increase in battery life Simulated laboratory cycling confirms the large increase in cycle life with the Blue Battery

11 NSB Solar – OPZV Technology
