1  Do Now: Prepare yourself to watch a brief clip explaining the origins of Black History Month. Number and write 3-5 facts from the video.  Your essay was due several days ago; you need to turn it in for credit. (Stapled: Rubric, Essay, Organizer)  Today, I will be able to explain the 6 goals to the U.S. Constitution and the 5 principles of our government. I will be able to explain the origins of Black History Month.

2  Who is credited with the founding of Black History Month?  Why did he feel it was necessary to chronicle the achievements of African Americans ?  What do we know about his background?  What year did we as an entire nation begin to recognize Black History Month?  Why was February selected to celebrate Black History Month?

3  2 February: Read, answered, and reviewed sections 8.1/8.2: Origins of Black History Month.  3 February: The amendment process and quiz on 8.1/2  4 February: Review the amendment process, how does government work  Benjamin Banneker  5 February: Quiz Amendments 1-27  6 February: Read 8.5 and answer Qs 1-7 on page 235.

4  The goals of our government are clearly stated in the Constitution’s preamble.  Form a more perfect union  Establish justice  Ensure domestic tranquility  Provide for the common defense  Promote the general welfare  Secure the blessings of liberty

5  Popular sovereignty  Citizens have a say in who represents them  Limited government  Belief that the government’s power should be checked (9 th and 10 th Amendments)  Federalism  Divided and shared powers between the state and federal government. Federal government is the Supreme law of the land.  Separation of powers  Creation of 3 branches of government: (Articles 1-3)  Checks and balances  Make sure one branch doesn’t become too powerful.
