Update on IFE Target Fabrication and Injection Activities Presented by Dan Goodin at the ARIES Project Meeting January 10-11, 2002 UCSD San Diego, California

Target fabrication critical issues 1) Ability to fabricate target capsules & hohlraums 2) Ability to fabricate them economically 3) Ability to fabricate, assemble, fill and layer at required rates Power plant studies have concluded that $0.25 targets are needed - reduced from ~$2500 each for current targets “Critical issues” for targets are being addressed Target injection critical issues 4) Withstand acceleration during injection 5) Survive thermal environment 6) Accuracy and repeatability, tracking NRL Radiation Preheat Target LLNL Close-Coupled HI Target.... We are addressing issues for both laser and heavy-ion driven IFE targets “Baseline” targets A detailed experimental plan for target injection has been prepared - and is being carried out

 Held FDR on 11/16/01  Completed structural design for Bldg. 22 injector site - bids due 1/16/02 (GA funded)  Setup single-shot and single-axis tracking (plus timing) this CY  Electromagnetic accelerator  Evaluating as a backup to the gas-gun  linear induction motor with Al sabot as armature; completed model analysis with simple experimental verification Illustration of IFE Experimental Target Injection and Tracking System in GA’s Bldg. 22 Design of the target injection and tracking experimental demonstration equipment was completed

Injection System procurement is underway Position Verification Detectors Target Position Detectors Sabot Deflector Turbo Pumps Vacuum Expansion Tanks Gun Barrel Target Catcher Revolver Chamber Phased procurement approach - beginning with component verification testing  single-shot w/ tracking at one detector  then full single-axis tracking with timing

US/Japan workshop on target fabrication and injection  Held December 3-4, 2001 at GA -About 20 participants from ILE/Osaka, Nagoya Univ., Ibaraki Univ. Gifu Univ., UCSD, LANL, Schafer, GA  Purpose = allow specialists in the areas of IFE target fabrication, injection, and tracking to exchange detailed technical information specific to their work  A CD with all information and all viewgraphs is being prepared for distribution (also will be on the ARIES website)

US/Japan target workshop summary & action items This workshop has been very useful to allow specialists to exchange detailed technical information specific to their work. To make it even more useful, we should continue with collaborations valuable to the programs of both countries - future actions are: 1) Continued workshops on an annual basis  November 2002 in San Diego, ~ 1 week workshop in US to include small-group brainstorming sessions to focus on specific problems of each participant  Action = Dr. Norimatsu to finalize date, attendees, and Japanese topics by 8/02, Dan Goodin to finalie US topics by 8/02 2) Personnel exchanges Year 1 - US person visit ILE target fab labs (3-4 week working assignment)  Action = Dan Goodin to propose traveler, dates, and topic to Dr. Norimatsu by 3/02 Year 2 - Japan person to work with target injector at GA  Action = Dr. Norimatsu to propose traveler by 3/03 3) Japan to send samples to US for characterization (e.g., transparent shells)  Action = Abbas Nikroo to identify desired samples by 1/02 4) US provide characterization of samples (e.g., spheremapper, wallmapper)  Action = Dr. Norimatsu to provide samples and requested analyses by 1/02 5) Collaborate on a “Moore’s Law for Targets” publication  Action = Dan Goodin to identify schedule for publication by 1/02 and provide outline by 2/02.... The Japanese are “natural partners” for the US target technology development program

Target technology development work is continuing in CY02 under OFES and HAPL….  Work with HIF target designers to simplify materials  Fabricate special low-density materials for HIF targets  Procure specific injection equipment for hohlraums  Optimize fluidized bed GDP coating conditions  Conduct experiments to produce IFE size shells by microencapsulation  Optimize high-Z coatings for radiation preheat target  Develop methods and characterize foam shells for diameter, sphericity, concentricity, wall thickness, avg foam density, areal density, overcoat surface finish & permeability  Design experiment to demonstrate cryogenic hydrogen layering  Conduct chemical engineering analysis of TFF with goal of cost-estimate Target fabrication activities Target injection activities  Install single-shot, single-axis target injection system  Model thermal and mechanical response of target during injection (with UCSD)  Conduct experiment to measure the thermal response of DT when exposed to a rapid heat flux (at LANL)
