Discrimination: Part II May 15, 2007
2
Bellringer Do you think we will ever get to the point where discrimination based on race will ever end?

Discrimination Based on Race Most Americans believe that racial discrimination is both morally and legally wrong. Today, almost no one defends segregated public facilities or the operation of separate public school systems for children or different races or ethnic groups. Nevertheless, both segregated schools and discrimination are still problems. Some questions that should be answered:

Discrimination Based on Race Does providing opportunities for people who have been denied equal rights in the past result in fewer opportunities for others? Do discrimination laws originally passed to protect minorities also protect majorities? Must the disadvantaged be treated differently in order to be treated equally? Should there be reparation to make up for past injuries?
5
Discrimination in Education Public Schools were desegregated after Brown vs. The Board of Education case in 1954. In theory, schools were opened to students of all races. But segregated schools still exist. Many inner city schools are populated with minorities while schools in suburban areas are mostly white. Why is this? What would be a good remedy? Do inner city schools receive less money than suburban schools?
6
Affirmative Action Steps taken by an organization to remedy past discrimination in hiring, promotion, education, etc. for example, by recruiting minorities and women. Is affirmative action controversial? Is it fair to allow people with lesser seniority access to promotions, jobs and training over those with more seniority or qualification?
7
Discrimination in Employment The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin. It does permit employment discrimination based on religion, sex or national origin if it is a necessary qualification of the job. Examples include Only interviewing women for a theatrical company part that must be played by a woman
