The MEDAWARE Project 1 st Annual Meeting Tenerife, 16-7-2004 Dr. Despo Fatta

Past Activities Kick-off meeting, 27/6/2003 Task 1 (completed, October 2003, m6) Task 2 (completed, Feb. - March 2004, m10) Task 3 (completed, March 2004, m11)  Site Visits (postponed for July)

TASK 1: Determination of the Countries Profile Part A: Geography and Population Part B: Climate and Water Resources Part C: Wastewater and the Use of Non Conventional Water Resources Part D: Agriculture and Irrigation Practices Part E: Water related problems associated with Health and Environment Part F: Water Policy and Institutional Environment

Task 2: Existing Situation related to the operation of UWTPs and the Effluent Disposal Practices with emphasis on the Reuse in the Agricultural Production Number and Location of UWTPs Population served by UWTPs Presentation of the technologies applied Existing effluent quantity and quality in selected plants Prevailing effluent disposal methods and practices Impacts caused by the operation of the UWTP and the disposal practices applied Determination of pollutant removal efficiencies of selected wastewater treatment facilities

Task 3: Analysis of Best Practices and Success Stories Recommendations of the WFD Success stories on agricultural reuse of urban wastewater in Mediterranean countries  Selected cases: Cyprus, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey Other good examples on agricultural reuse of wastewater all over the world  Selected cases: Australia, Kuwait, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and USA

Task 3: Analysis of Best Practices and Success Stories Problems associated with reclaimed water reuse projects Good reuse practises Selection of wastewater treatment methods The cost of wastewater reclamation and reuse

Future Tasks Task 4: Development of Specifications for UWT Technologies and Systems (to be completed by January 2005, m21)  Review of the UWT technologies (m15)  Review of the standards (m15)  Development of technical specifications (m21)  Training on the UWT technologies (postponed up to m26)

Future Tasks Task 5: Development of Specifications for UWT Utilization (to be completed by June 2005, m26)  Review of the UW Reuse Systems focusing on the reuse in agricultural production (m 22) Methods Standards (completed, but can be updated…)  Development of specifications for the reuse in agriculture (m 25) Reduction of pathogens Crop restrictions Application methods Human exposure  Development of guidelines for the storage conditions (m25)  Examination of all limitations/constraints that might hinder sustainable reuse (m25)  Training on the urban wastewater reuse technologies and systems (m 26)

Training Workshops Combined workshops for Tasks 4 and 5 In each country of the Med partners  Cyprus, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Turkey All actors involved can be invited 2 or 3 days

The road ahead… 2 nd Annual Meeting …most probably combined with one of the countries’ workshops

Task 6: Development of a Methodology and a Database for the Control and Monitoring of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Plants (m 26-30) Task 7: Development of a Multi-criteria – Guiding Support Software Tool for the Assessment and Valuation of Safe Wastewater Agricultural Reuse (m 31- 42)
