2 “If any slave, negro, or free person of color, or any white person, shall teach any other slave, negro or free person of color, to read or write either written or printed characters, the said free person of color or slave shall be punished by fine and whipping” A codification of the Statute Law of Georgia

3 1.Why do you think white people did not want African Americans to read or write? 2. If slaves were considered property, shouldn’t their masters have been able to do with their “property” as they wish…including read and write?

4 3. In 1820, a slave in South Carolina named Abram was going to be set free by his master for telling him about a rebellion plot by other slaves. If you were a white, South Carolina Senator at the time, would you have voted to free Abram? Why or why not?
