3. 1.Why do you think white people did not want African Americans to read or write? 2. If slaves were considered property, shouldn’t their masters have been able to do with their “property” as they wish…including read and write?

4. 3. In 1820, a slave in South Carolina named Abram was going to be set free by his master for telling him about a rebellion plot by other slaves. If you were a white, South Carolina Senator at the time, would you have voted to free Abram? Why or why not?
