2 GUIDING PRINCIPLES A resume is a work in progress, updated each semester. It is unique and emphasizes your strengths. It is honest and is a document of facts you can back up. It highlights education, skills, and experiences relevant to the career or position of interest. It informs the reader of who you are and what you have to offer. Your confidence in your resume can affect the confidence your reader has in you.

6 HEADING Two space-saving formats. Include your address, even though it is likely employers will contact you by phone or email.

7 OBJECTIVE aka: SUMMARY, PROFILE, QUALIFICATIONS Optional: 50% of the students use this section. When to use:  You would like to show focused career interests.  When your career interests are non-traditional (consulting, technical sales, for example). When not to use:  You are open to a variety of opportunities and do not want to narrow your options.  You need the 3 extra lines for something more important.

Use past tense verbs if you are not currently in the position, present tense otherwise. Introduce the department or project team to help the reader visualize the environment within which you worked. Describe the nature of your work or specific projects you worked on. Include units or individuals you collaborated with and the tools you used. Share what you learned or gained from the experience. Include specific results, if available. List experiences in reverse chronological order (most recent first). If the order is not to your advantage – create two experience sections: Relevant Experience and Other Experience.

11 RELEVANT PROJECTS E-help Desk: Developed a web application to perform ticket routing among different levels of support. (Java) Database Application: Designed and developed a customer support application. (Java, Oracle) Security Protocol Design: Designed and implemented security protocols to be used at server end of an email service application. (Java) Prioritize projects, choose descriptive titles, describe projects, and include tools used. Dates are optional.
