3 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 3 Design Decisions?  Define your Business Goals: decide which business processes are best supported (or replaced).  Be clear why you are creating this site: by deciding what you want your Web-site to Be and Do.  Make sure that you: Know your Audience!

4 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 4 Remember your Audience?  You are NOT designing for yourself: design is no substitute for functionality.  Make it easy to find what matters: snail-mail addresses and telephone numbers should not always be easily found!  Have realistic expectations: even if they are modest ones.  Start small, but design for scalability: Web-sites suit a phased development, but “Under Construction” notices are BAD!

5 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 5 Things NOT to do on a Web Page!  Don't crowd images.  Don't be inconsistent with structure.  Don't have too much information (data?) on a single page.  Don't leave the important stuff for the bottom.  Don't violate white-space balance.  Don't forget other platforms & browsers.  Don't forget to make the title of each Web- page very descriptive.

6 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 6 “Keep it Simple”  And your Web-site will be: easier to build; consistent structure, common ‘look-and-feel’, easier navigation, etc. easier to maintain; no Web-site is ever complete, they are always ‘under construction’, so NEVER say so!  And remember that “less is definitely more”: except when it comes to testing!

7 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 7 Use your Web Development Plan! 1.Business Analysis; What business processes/problems does the Case Study organisation have? 2.Competition Analysis; How have other, similar, organisations used the Web in order to support their business processes. 3.Content Decisions; Which business processes might be best supported, and which problems might best be solved, by an Internet/Web solution? 4.Site Map; How will the Content be organised, i.e. what shape will the Web-site be?

8 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 8 How to Build a Web-site?  Name all files on the ‘Site Map’. this will save a lot of anguish later!  Develop the ‘standard’ Web-page: most (all?) Web Pages will look like this. make the major navigation ‘work’.  Use copies of the ‘standard’ Web-page: for a consistent ‘look-and-feel’. adding the Page Content as required: from existing documents if possible?  Test, test, test!

11 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 11 Use the ‘Standard’  Open the ‘standard’: save (immediately!) with a new file name, i.e. refer to the names on your ‘Site-Map’.  Add the ‘Page Content’: utilising existing text and images where ever possible.  Examine the Results: and make any necessary adjustments.  Repeat for all Web-pages: using the same ‘standard’.

13 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 13 Take Your Time & “Keep it Simple”  Spend quite a lot of time developing your ‘standard’ Web-page: you don’t want to have to change the ‘standard’, having already used it to build several Web-pages with the original ‘bad’ version.  Make sure that you only work with files that are located in ONE folder: or work only on a floppy disk; as that is what you have to hand in.  And remember that “less is definitely more”: except when it comes to testing!

Deadline = 20 th May 2009  Web-site Implementation & Evaluation 70% of Web-site Development Marks  What is required? Implement an appropriate ‘Web-site’ for the case study organisation; based on your submission for Assignment 1, i.e. your 'Web Development Plan'. The Home Page MUST; have the file name index.htm The Whole Web-site MUST; fit on, and work from, a single 3.5” Floppy Disk, i.e. the total size of ALL files MUST be <= 1.38Mb.

15 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 15 The GIC Case Study  The General Insurance Company (GIC), is based in Manchester, and was originally set-up in 1997 by David and Jane Cowper, who had just completed their undergraduate degrees.  Since then the company has experienced modest growth, and they now employ a staff of 6 Insurance Clerks (based at the Head Office in Manchester) and 12 Insurance Advisors who deal directly with Customers in one of 4 Regions of the UK.  GIC offer a range of general insurance products, including Motor, Home, Travel and Life Insurance, which are sold to Customers by one of the Insurance Advisors for the Region in which they live.

17 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 17 The GIC Case Study (Problems?)  GIC are having particular problems with the following areas of their business activity: Building up their customer base – they want more people who require general insurance to know they exist and what they have to offer. Supporting new and existing customers with information – to help them decide on the right type of insurance to match their requirements. Insurance Advisors often spend a great deal of their time, travelling to visit customers, and answering the same, predictable, questions. Capturing the data for insurance calculations – some of the data that needs to be gathered before an Insurance Quotation can be calculated is quite extensive, and often involves filling in quite complex Insurance Forms. Calculating insurance quotations – which often requires a number of quite time-consuming, and hence error prone, manual calculations to be performed.

18 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 18 Assignment 2: Web-site Implementation Deadline: 20 th May 2009 ( 70% of Marks ) 1.Robustness (15 Marks) The extent to which your Web-site has been fully tested, so that there are no broken hyperlinks, no missing images, and that both spelling and grammar are accurate. It will be difficult (IMPOSSIBLE?) to give you very many (ANY?) of the rest of the marks for this assignment if the Web-site does not function. 2.Consistency (15 Marks) The consistency of the Web-site as a whole, the chosen Navigation Method(s), and the structure of individual Web-pages.

19 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 19 Assignment 2: Web-site Implementation Deadline: 20 th May 2009 ( 70% of Marks ) 3.Creativity (15 Marks) The elegance, ingenuity and downright style of your Web-site. 4.Business Relevance (40 Marks) The extent to which your Web-site is ‘appropriate’ for this business – i.e. how well it supports specific business processes. 5.Web-site Evaluation (15 Marks) A critical evaluation of the ‘appropriateness’ of the Web-site you have produced.

20 Ian Perry 44212: Web-site Development: Review & Assignment 2 Requirements Slide 20 No more Lectures!  There will be NO more Lectures in support of the WSD Module. There will, however, be TWO more Workshops, i.e.: 1 st May, 2009 & 15 th May, 2009 You MUST have begun to implement a Web-site for the General Insurance Company; in order for me to help you during these Assignment Support sessions.  Remember, the Assignment 2 Deadline is; Wednesday, the 20 th of May, 2009.  Good Luck!
