2 Recap File sizes are important when emailing a document – why ? What is storage measured in ? Storage is measure in kb, mb, gb and tb. Compression can be used to increase file sizes – true or false ? Do all digital devices have some form of storage in them? Yes, or else they would not be able to store information or data. When creating file and folders – what should you do? – Make files and folders clear as to what they contain. – Set the permissions to limit what others can do i.e. read, write, edit Viruses can be spread by : email, internet, networks and memory sticks Make back-ups and keep them in a different location

3 Managing, Finding and Selecting information Lesson Aims and Objectives – find and select reliable information appropriate for purpose and audience – evidence how you manage information saved from the internet You will learn how to: – identify the information requirements of a task – construct efficient searches – evaluate the reliability of websites – select appropriate information – acknowledge your sources

4 Browsers and search engines Task – What is a web browser and what is a search engine ? A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. A search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. 5 Bookmarks or favourites Book marks or favourites are stored web addresses. If you want to visit a web page again, storing it as a bookmark will allow you to easily traverse to that webpage in the future. Task- Skill builder 3.1 1.Open the list of favourites in your browser. Click on an entry in the list. What happens? 2.Add the address of a website that interests you to your browser’s favourites. 3.What other facilities does your browser offer? 10 mins

6 Recap - File Names and Extensions Browsers allow you to access the internet Search engines allow you to search for information. Bookmarks allow you to save pages for future use A web address is composed of a minimum of two parts – the prefix indicating it is a web page and the domain name, can also have the name of the web page.

7 Efficient searches When looking for information on the internet you need to ensure : – The search criteria is accurate If you do not use good/clear search criteria: – Lots of hits that are not relevant Use boolean operators to narrow down the search. AND, OR, NOT, =,, <=, =<.

8 Skillbuilder 3.2 Task – Use a search engine to find : 1.what is the speed limit on motorways in France 2.How long it will take to get a train from London to Amsterdam? Do you need to change? 3.Where is the head office of Edexcel? Record the number of hits 10 mins Extension task : Try using speech marks.

9 Skill builder Boolean Logic OR – College OR University used for related searches AND – Poverty AND Crime used for related searches NOT – Cats NOT Dogs used for excluding data from search Using at least one of the operators above repeat Skillbuilder 3.2 and compare hit numbers 10 mins

11 Information gathering Task- Work in pairs and search for a leisure park called Smarts Leisure. Find out three facts about this particular leisure park – you must not talk to other pairs or compare answers whilst they are searching. ‘validity’, ‘accuracy’ and ‘authority’ as criteria for evaluating websites 5 mins

12 Information gathering Task- List these sources in order of how reliable and accurate the information in them is likely to be: – www.wikipedia.org – www.bbc.co.uk – www.direct.gov.uk – www.manufans.co.uk – www.loucoll.ac.uk 5mins

13 Recap- Information gathering Ensure websites are: 1.valid 2.accurate 3.reliable Tips for finding reliable information on the internet – Think before you search. – Do not believe everything you see or hear on the internet. – Always check information using another source. – Check permissions before using material you find. – Record where exactly you found the information.
