1 1 "Wikis: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" Brand Niemann Senior Enterprise Architect, US EPA and COIC Semantic Interoperability CoP, Co-Chair Panel at the NIH Wiki Fair February 28, 2007, Lister Hill Center (Building 38A) on the NIH Campus, Bethesda, MD

2 2 What First Comes to Mind! At Wikipedia* no less: –Spaghetti Westerns - produced by Italian studios. –Italian language, low budgets, and a recognizable highly fluid, violent, and minimalist cinematography. –The term was originally used disparagingly, but by the 1980s many of these films came to be held in high regard, particularly because it was hard to ignore the influence they had in redefining the entire idea of a western up to that point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Good,_the_Bad_and_the_Ugly

3 3 Applying This To Wikis… “For Three Men the Civil War Wasn’t Hell, It was Practice!” –The Ugly (Tuco): Non-standardized markup so content is not interoperable from one Wiki to another. –The Bad (Angel Eyes): Long pages to scroll through and print (see next slide). –The Good (Blondie): Semantic Wikis deal with the Ugly and the Bad!

4 4 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia… This article or section contains a plot summary that may be overly long, confusing, or ambiguous. Please edit it to both contextualise the fictional nature of the work and focus on discussing the work rather than simply reiterating the plot. You may also discuss changes on the talk page. See Wikipedia's guide to writing better articles for suggestions. Please note as well that excessively long plot summaries and synopses may constitute copyright violation.
