Comments? feedback@dataworks-ed.com 6 th Grade Number Sense 1.1 (3Q) Compare and order positive and negative fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers and place them on a number line. Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. Today, we will compare fractions and decimal numbers. CFU Students, you already know how to represent fractions as decimals. Today, we will use our knowledge of these equal amounts to compare fractions to decimal numbers. Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge Name _______________________ Learning Objective CFU What are we going to do today? Represent these fractions as decimals. A decimal number and a fraction both represent part of a whole. A fraction can be changed into a decimal number using long division. 1.2.

To compare fractions and decimal numbers, change the fraction to a decimal number. To compare decimal numbers, line up the decimal numbers by place value. o Compare the digits 2 from left to right. o The same digit in the same place value has equal value. o The greater digit in the same place value has a greater value. 1 figure out 2 numbers 0 to 9 Comparing Fractions and Decimal Numbers 0.78 3 4 > 3 4 0.75= 08 05 7 7 CFU Which long division problem shows how to change the fraction into a decimal number? Step #2: Line up the decimal numbers by place value. Step #3: Compare each digit starting from the left. a. If the digits have the same value, move to the place value to the right. b. If the digits have different value, determine which digit has the greater value. Step #4: Complete the number sentence. Hint: Write the correct comparison symbol. Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. 1. Comparing fraction and decimal numbers will help you compare amounts in the real world. CFU Does anyone else have another reason why it is relevant to compare fractions and decimal numbers? (pair-share) Why is it relevant to compare fractions and decimal numbers? You may give one of my reasons or one of your own. Which reason is more relevant to you? Why? 2. Comparing fractions and decimal numbers will help you do well on tests. Relevance To compare numbers means to determine whether a number is less than, greater than, or equal to another number. To compare fractions and decimal numbers, change the fraction to a decimal number. Alfredo is comparing the price of bananas to apples. Apples are a half dollar each and bananas are $0.25 each. $0.50 each $0.25 each Alfredo knows that the bananas are cheaper than the apples.
