1 READY TO TEACH SM EDI ® Lessons ©2013 All rights reserved. EDI Lesson Overview 5 th Grade Math Learning Objective: We will round decimals. Focus Standard: 5.NBT.4 Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. Support Standard: 5.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit numbers, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. SMP 1, SMP 2, SMP 3, SMP 6, SMP 7, SMP 8 Prerequisite(s): 4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. Special Instructions: In this lesson, number lines are used to show the concept of rounding. By giving students a visual representation of the number being nearer to the value it is rounded to, they can see the relationship. Lesson consists of two parts in Skill Development/Guided Practice and Independent Practice. Vocabulary Academic: identify, determine, interpret Content: place, value, round Support: appropriate Common Core Shifts in Mathematics Shift 1 Focus Shift 2 Coherence Shift 3 Fluency Shift 4 Deep Understanding Shift 5 Application Shift 6 Dual Intensity Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) SMP1 Make sense of problems SMP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively SMP3 Construct arguments and critique the reasoning of others SMP4 Model with math SMP5 Use appropriate tools SMP6 Attend to precision SMP7 Make use of structure SMP8 Look for regularity in repeated reasoning

2 CCSS 5 th Grade Numbers and Operations in Base Ten 4.0 Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. READY TO TEACH SM EDI ® Lessons ©2013 All rights reserved. What are we going to do? CFU Students, you already know how to identify the place value of numbers. Now, we are going to use place value to round decimals. Make Connection Place value: The place is the position of a digit in a number. The value is the worth of the digit due to its position. We will round decimals. Learning Objective Activate Prior Knowledge 9 3 6. 7 1 9 7. 5 2 6 The value of 7 in 936.71 is _______. The value of 6 in 97.526 is _______. 0.7 0.006 1. What is the value of the digit 7? 2. What is the value of the digit 6?

Would 3.72 rounded to the nearest tenth round up or down? How do you know? A up B down Would 3.72 rounded to the nearest one round up or down? How do you know? A up B down In your own words, what does it mean to round a decimal number? “To round a decimal number means ______________.” CFU Rounding Decimals Concept Development To round a decimal number is to change it to a near value. Rounding down changes the number to a lesser value. A jacket costs $34.75 and a pair of gloves costs $8.52. If Jordon has $50, does he have enough money to buy both items? Use rounding to explain. Yes. $2.98 is nearer in value to $3 and $4.21 is nearer in value to $4. So $2.98 + $4.21 is approximately $3 + $4 = $7 which is less than $10. Yes. $7.29 is nearer in value to $7 and $8.99 is nearer in value to $9. So $7.29 + $8.99 is approximately $7 + $9 = $16 which is less than $20. Yes. $34.75 is nearer in value to $35 and $8.52 is nearer in value to $9. So $34.75 + $8.52 is approximately $35 + $9 = $44 which is less than $50.
