2 2 The Internet, Intranets & Extranets  The Internet. From about 50 million Internet users in 1997, there could be as many as 750 million by 2007.  Intranets utilize information technology to provide organizations with internal communication systems.  Extranets combine intranets with the Internet to create a powerful interorganizational systems for collaboration.

3 3 Definition: A network made up of millions of smaller private networks each with the ability to operate independent of, or in harmony with, all the other millions of networks connected to the Internet Internet

4 4 Usual purposes of the Internet For email and file transfer with the addition of the World Wide Web Provides an excellent vehicle for information dissemination Promotion of products and services on a public web site

5 5 There are two major aspects to organization’s planned use of the Internet: 1.Accessing content and using services on the Internet Organization operates as client Perform searches product and services Make payments Track shipments

Through modems on PCs ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) T-1 (T-Carrier) Line Depending on the amount of access the organization expects

Providing content and services on the net The organization has or is ready to have a web site on the internet The server may be co-located at ISP (Internet Service Provider) of the organization Web site may reside on a shared web server hosted and maintained by another organization

8 8 Effective Organizations Set Goals at Many Different Levels World Wide Web council To plan the Internet in regards of organizations Mission statement and Strategy Network / Systems administration To maintain the LAN and the Internet connectivity

9 9 Providing content and services on the net In order to access content : Standard web browser LAN Ethernet Hubs to connect multiple systems to the Ethernet LAN Routers to connect to the Internet

10 10 The criteria of providing access to the Internet To serve static web pages with organization information To provide transaction capabilities (24 hours/day, 7 days/week) Mirrored site Plan for hot backup

11 11 The ways that information of organization makes publicly available via Brochures Advertisement Direct mailing Videotapes and other media All these information can have place on the web site

12 12 A well-designed public web site is organized in a meaningful way Focus on how best to communicate the organizations Mission and message to intended audience

13 13 Public web site of an organization becomes more complicated if: There are more than one type of service or product Serve more than one community Itself consist of multiple organizations Reasons Present information by product category or by division The site must reflects the corporate image that the organization want to portray To decide the site will provide customer and/or technical support

21 21 Moving to the Web Its very important to have the right resources If the organization does not have in-house resources For sure it should Look for Out-sources
