WARM UP 4/12 1. Write down any parts of the brain you know (ex:cerebrum) 2. Write down 3 other facts you know about the brain 3. Write down 3 things you want to learn about the brain.

NOTES Ch 11 4/12 Intro to the brain

BRAIN FACTS 2% of body weight Average 3 pounds Over 100 billion neurons Brain cells do not reproduce Different areas of the brain process or control different things

STRUCTURE Made of 2 HEMISPHERES – halves Left and right *The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa

CORPUS CALLOSUM – connects the 2 hemispheres

LEFT or RIGHT BRAINED?? Most people tend to use one side of their brain more than the other….this shows up in the way they do things, their personality, and they way they learn. We are going to take a test to see what side of your brain you use the most……

When you are done with your test, use the key to find out your score

LEFT-BRAINED Make lists, check them off Good speller Good in math Formulas Memorization Can express themselves in words well Like rules; follow them Meet deadlines Use of symbols Good sense of time Very logical in thinking

RIGHT-BRAINED Need to know why Like hands-on learning Go by gut feelings Not good in spelling Hard meeting deadlines; late work Work on many things at once Very creative Hard time writing/ need many drafts Know answers, not sure how got it Do things randomly Don’t like rules Good at expression in art, music, and dance

LEFT Verbal Punctual Formal quiet study Sits still, long studying Not many gestures when speaking Plans ahead Remembers people’s names RIGHT Visual Late Study with sounds/music Moves around while studying Gestures a lot when speaking Impulsive Remembers faces

CAN YOU SEE WHAT SCHOOLS ARE GEARED TOWARD???? Right-brained people have a harder time in school…need to find ways to develop and use their left brain more. Left-brained people, school is more natural to them.

GYRI – ridges SULCI – grooves These make up the “wrinkles” of the brain These help increase surface area

FISSURES – deep grooves that divide the brain into lobes Different lobes (areas) receive different impulses 1. FRONTAL LOBE – motor control (muscle); language comp.; speech; problem solving; reasoning; emotions

2. PARIETAL – skin senses; taste 3. TEMPORAL – hearing; interpretation; memory; smell 4. OCCIPITAL - vision

CEREBRAL CORTEX – outermost layer of the brain (gray matter) WHITE MATTER – innermost layer of the brain

VENTRICLES – cavities or spaces in the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER – * least permeable capillaries in the body * most toxins, proteins, wastes, etc, cannot enter the brain through blood * gases, alcohol, nicotine, and many other drugs can cross into the brain – destroys neurons

MAJOR DIVISIONS OF THE BRAIN 1. Brain stem * 3”long * where the spinal cord ends into * midbrain, pons, medulla 2. Diencephalon * on top of the brain stem * thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus

3. Cerebellum * back of head 4. Cerebrum * largest part of brain * top of head

BRAIN LABELING 1. Frontal lobe 2. Parietal lobe 3. Occipital lobe 4. Temporal lobe 5. Fissure 6. Gyri 7. sulci

1. Spinal cord 2. Medulla oblongata 3. Pons 4. Mamillary body 5. Pituitary gland 6. Ventricle 7. Corpus callosum 8. Cerebrum 9. Pineal gland 10. cerebellum

BRAIN PARTS: FUNCTIONS Make into a chart format: PART FUNCTION 1. Medulla 8. Pineal gland 2. Pons 9. Pituitary gland 3. Midbrain 10. Mamillary body 4. Cerebellum 5. Thalamus 6. hypothalamus 7. Cerebrum
