Folliculitis Folliculitis is an inflammation of hair follicles. Folliculitis can occur anywhere on the body. Most commonly forms when hairs are damaged by friction from clothing.

Causes FFolliculitis forms when hair is damaged from friction in clothing. FFollicles can also be formed by insect bites. BBlockage of the follicles is another main cause. FFor men it can also form from shaving. For girls it can form from too tight of braids too close to the scalp. IIn most cases damaged follicles then become infected with bacteria

Symptoms The most common symptom is a rash, itching will most likely follow. Pimples or pustules near a hair follicle in the neck groin or genital area. The pimples may crust over.

Treatments Hot moist compression may promote drainage of the infected follicles. Antibiotics may be applied to the affected areas or may be taken by mouth. Depending on the severity of your folliculitis you may have to take antifungal medicines.

Prevention To prevent further damage to the hair follicles and infection: Reduce friction from clothing Avoid shaving the area if possible (if shaving is necessary, use a clean, new razor blade or an electric razor each time Keep the area clean Avoid contaminated clothing and washcloths
